Some people say that in the digital age, theatres and cinemas are no longer important as people can watch all the entertainment they want online. Others argue that theatres and cinemas are still important both economically and culturally.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
It is being argued by a group of individuals that in this era of technology theatres and cinemas are not much significant because people can entertain themselves online. On the contrary, another group believes that these entertainment sites are still culturally and economically important. I will discuss both views in the later paragraphs and provide my opinion in the final paragraph.
The supporters of first argument must be reporting that it is more affordable and convenient to watch movies online. The busy and stressed lifestyle of the people is a crucial factor that people like to enjoy films at homes rather than visiting theatres and cinemas. For example, it is described in a scientific report that only 2% people are going to cinemas while 70 % people are watching movies at home.
The second group would be arguing that it is important for the economy of a country that its citizens are visiting cinemas. When a film is released it is sold to the cinemas and ultimately helps to boost economy of the nation. It is evidenced by a research in India that 38% of its GDP is only generated from the film industry mainly theatres and cinemas. Similarly, It is culturally important to have cinemas because in this way the culture of a nation would be elaborated and practiced.
In conclusion, I would put forward that the individual interests in watching films in cinemas and theatres is reducing due to affordability and convenience of digital entertainment but these sites are still very important for the cultural and economical aspects of a nation.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear opinion in the conclusion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the claim that 38% of India's GDP comes from the film industry is factually questionable and lacks a nuanced explanation of how cinemas specifically contribute to the economy beyond ticket sales. The argument regarding convenience is relevant but could be expanded with more depth. The position is clear, but the supporting evidence feels slightly superficial, which prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. To improve, ensure that examples are more realistic and that the analysis of each viewpoint is more thoroughly explored.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organized into four paragraphs, with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'On the contrary', 'For example', and 'Similarly', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally repetitive. For example, the use of 'The supporters of first argument' and 'The second group' is functional but lacks variety. The paragraphing is appropriate, and there is a clear progression of ideas throughout the text. To improve, try to use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that the flow between sentences is more natural and less formulaic.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to convey their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'elaborated', 'practiced', and 'economical aspects'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'not much significant' is unnatural; 'not very significant' or 'less significant' would be better. Additionally, 'economical' is used where 'economic' is the correct term (economical refers to saving money, while economic refers to the economy). While the vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the message, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'It is being argued by a group of individuals' (passive voice is slightly awkward here), 'only 2% people' (should be '2% of people'), and 'boost economy of the nation' (missing article 'the'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. The student demonstrates an ability to use complex structures, but the control over these structures is inconsistent. Focusing on article usage and subject-verb agreement will help improve the overall accuracy of the writing.
