IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that in the digital age, theatres and cinemas are no longer important as people can watch all the entertainment they want online. Others argue that theatres and cinemas are still important both economically and culturally.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

The advancement of digital technology has completely changed the way people enjoy entertainment. While some argue that theatres and cinemas have become unnecessary because almost every form of entertainment is available online, others believe that these places still play an indispensable role in society. This essay will discuss both views before explaining why I believe they should continue to exist.

On the one hand, many people prefer online entertainment due to its convenience, affordability, and flexibility. Streaming platforms enable viewers to watch films, documentaries, concerts, and even live performances whenever they want without leaving their homes. This not only saves time and travelling expenses but also offers access to an enormous variety of international content. For example, during the COVID-19 pandemic, millions of people relied on online platforms such as Netflix and YouTube to watch newly released films and virtual concerts. This demonstrated that digital services could satisfy people's entertainment needs even when cinemas and theatres were closed.

On the other hand, theatres and cinemas provide an unforgettable experience that online platforms simply cannot replicate. Watching a film on a giant screen with surround sound or attending a live theatrical performance creates a unique atmosphere and emotional connection among the audience. Moreover, these venues make a significant contribution to the economy by creating employment opportunities for actors, directors, technicians, ticket sellers, and workers in nearby restaurants and cafés. A good example is Broadway in New York and the West End in London, which attract millions of tourists every year, generate billions of dollars in revenue, and preserve the rich tradition of live performing arts while promoting local culture.

In my opinion, although digital entertainment has become an essential part of modern life, it should complement rather than replace theatres and cinemas. Their economic benefits, cultural significance, and unique viewing experience ensure that they will remain valuable for future generations.
