Student answer (Band 7.5)

Some people say that in the digital age, theatres and cinemas are no longer important as people can watch all the entertainment they want online. Others argue that theatres and cinemas are still important both economically and culturally.

The development of digital technology has changed the way people access entertainment. While some believe that online platforms have made theatres and cinemas unnecessary, others argue that these places continue to play a significant role in society. This essay will discuss both views before explaining why I believe theatres and cinemas remain important despite the popularity of online streaming.

On the one hand, many people prefer watching films and other forms of entertainment online because it is more convenient and affordable. Streaming services allow viewers to watch movies, television programmes, and live events at any time without leaving their homes. This saves both time and money, as people no longer need to travel or purchase expensive cinema tickets. In addition, online platforms offer a wider variety of content, allowing individuals to choose entertainment that suits their personal interests. As a result, many people consider digital entertainment a practical alternative to traditional cinemas and theatres.

On the other hand, theatres and cinemas provide a unique experience that cannot be fully replaced by online platforms. Watching a film on a large screen with advanced sound systems creates a more immersive atmosphere than watching it on a mobile phone or television. Likewise, live theatre performances offer direct interaction between performers and audiences, making each performance unique. Furthermore, these venues contribute to the economy by creating employment opportunities for actors, technicians, and other staff. They also preserve cultural traditions by promoting local arts, drama, and music, which are valuable parts of a country's heritage.

In my opinion, although digital technology has transformed the entertainment industry, theatres and cinemas continue to have both economic and cultural value. Governments and private organisations should continue to support these institutions while also embracing technological developments. By doing so, people can enjoy the convenience of online entertainment without losing the social and cultural benefits of live performances and cinema experiences.

In conclusion, online entertainment has become increasingly popular because of its convenience and accessibility. Nevertheless, theatres and cinemas remain essential as they offer unique cultural experiences, strengthen the economy, and preserve artistic traditions. Therefore, I believe they will continue to play an important role in the digital age.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt. You have clearly discussed both perspectives—the convenience of online streaming and the cultural/economic value of physical venues—and provided a well-reasoned personal opinion. The ideas are extended and supported with relevant examples, such as the mention of 'direct interaction between performers and audiences' and the economic impact on 'actors, technicians, and other staff.' Your position is consistent throughout the essay, and the conclusion effectively synthesises the arguments presented. The development is logical and balanced, meeting the requirements for a high band score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organised with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between the two opposing views is handled smoothly using cohesive devices like 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand.' You use a variety of linking words such as 'Likewise,' 'Furthermore,' and 'Nevertheless' to connect sentences and ideas effectively. The paragraphing is appropriate, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each viewpoint, a paragraph for your opinion, and a conclusion. The flow is natural, and the cohesion is managed well throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with precision. Phrases like 'immersive atmosphere,' 'technological developments,' and 'preserve cultural traditions' show an awareness of style and collocation. While the vocabulary is accurate and appropriate for the task, it is generally standard. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more sophisticated or idiomatic expressions, such as 'ubiquity of digital platforms' or 'theatrical experience remains unparalleled.' However, the current range is flexible enough to convey your ideas clearly without any errors in word choice.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The essay displays a good variety of complex sentence structures, such as the use of 'While' clauses and conditional-like structures ('By doing so, people can...'). The grammar is highly accurate, with the majority of sentences being error-free. Punctuation is used correctly to support the clarity of your arguments. There are no significant grammatical slips that impede communication. The control over complex structures is consistent, and the overall level of accuracy is high, which is characteristic of a strong performance in this criterion.
