Some people say that in the digital age, theatres and cinemas are no longer important as people can watch all the entertainment they want online. Others argue that theatres and cinemas are still important both economically and culturally.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In the 21st century, where the digital era is at its peak, millennials understand and support the importance of theatres and cinemas whereas, Generation-z and latest generations prefer to watch them online in their own comfort zone. I would share how both views contradict and what is my personal input in it.

So first and foremost, millennials have lead their life during the initial digital era when landlines and button phones were running. There were no big screens or personalized gadgets for people and any new show would be released in the theatres where everyone would gather to watch them. Peoples' concept of socializing and meeting up with friends was through these entertainments. After a 9-5 job, people prefered to hang out in these areas which was not only benficial for the mental health but also an important economic factor to consider.

However, new generations didn't have to face those conditions and were born in the time where they grew up watching stuff on their personalized gadgets and socializing online. Their outdoor activites are different and more engaging than going to theatres which they prefer to watch online at home. Economic and Social culture is not affected by this as people still interact with others and better communication can be seen because of continuous online chatting and watching shows together through platforms like parsec. Buying subscriptions online for access to multiple platforms mitigates the economic factor also.

Being a generation-z myself, I stand firmly with the view that theatres and cinemas are no longer important and it doesn't affect us culturally or economically. I would rather watch a season/movie on bed in my comfort zone than dress up to go out to watch the latest released movie which is also readily available for me on my gadget. Also, almost every home now owns a big screen so doing a gathering and watching a Fifa match together is no issue whatsoever. I would encourage the opposing members of the view to broaden their horizon and see the world and its advancements in technology.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat superficial. The argument regarding the economic impact is underdeveloped; for instance, the claim that online subscriptions mitigate the economic loss of cinemas is not fully explained or supported by evidence. The essay relies heavily on personal anecdotes and generalizations about 'millennials' versus 'Generation-Z' rather than exploring broader societal or economic trends. To reach a higher band, you should provide more robust examples and deeper analysis of the economic and cultural implications of the decline of physical entertainment venues.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. There is a progression of ideas from the introduction to the conclusion. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly awkward, such as the transition 'So first and foremost' or the phrase 'I would share how both views contradict'. Referencing is generally clear, but the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to connect the arguments more fluidly. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different viewpoints.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'digital era', 'mitigates', and 'advancements'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'millennials have lead their life' (should be 'led') and 'doing a gathering' (should be 'hosting a gathering'). Some phrasing is informal, such as 'watching stuff' and 'on bed', which detracts from the academic tone required for this task. Expanding your vocabulary to include more precise, academic collocations would improve your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'new generations didn't have to face those conditions' (tense consistency) and 'peoples' concept' (incorrect possessive). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are minor errors throughout. The sentence structure is often repetitive, relying on similar patterns. To improve, focus on reducing minor errors and incorporating more varied complex structures, such as conditional sentences or passive voice, to demonstrate greater grammatical control.
