IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that in the digital age, theatres and cinemas are no longer important as people can watch all the entertainment they want online. Others argue that theatres and cinemas are still important both economically and culturally.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often argued amongst people that the digital era has reduced the significance of theatres, as most of the entertainment content is available on the web. While, the same has been largely debated, I only partially agree with this view. The following essay will discuss both the views in detail along with relevant examples and a logical conclusion.

On the one hand, the introduction of online entertainment applications and websites have provided people with an alternative to watch movies, web shows, and podcast at the comfort of their home. In the current scenario, everybody is busy with their own schedules, which is why the option to watch online provides them with the benefit to move at their own pace. This, in turn, not only helps them control their screen time but also facilitates them with an option to choose from the wide range of content available.

On the other hand, others argue that the experience that theatres hold is unmatched by any other source. To a number of people, theatre is an emotion, which they have known since childhood and that is irreplaceable. Even now, fans wait to watch their favourite movies on the first day- first show. Watching movie at a cinema acts like a go-out-plan, where families plan to watch movies and spend quality time together. For example, the experience to watch special screening shows like 5D, 7D can only be enjoyed at theatres.

In conclusion, while both the perspectives have valid reasons, I believe that the importance of theatres can never fade out completely. Although sources on internet provide with relatively decent amount of content to watch, the overall experience of a theatre can never be matched with that.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The essay addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both perspectives and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the convenience of online streaming versus the social and sensory experience of cinemas. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the economic aspect mentioned in the prompt is not explicitly addressed in the body paragraphs, and the arguments could be extended with more specific examples or deeper analysis to reach a higher band. The position is consistent throughout, but the depth of exploration is more characteristic of a Band 6.5 or 7.0 response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two opposing views. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. For example, the link between the 'busy schedules' and 'screen time' in the second paragraph is a bit abrupt. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate and appropriate for the task. You use some good collocations like 'quality time', 'digital era', and 'irreplaceable'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies and repetitive phrasing. For example, 'facilitates them with an option' is slightly unnatural; 'provides them with the option' would be better. The phrase 'relatively decent amount of content' is somewhat informal. To improve, try to incorporate more precise, topic-specific vocabulary related to the film industry or economic impacts to demonstrate a wider range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'Watching movie at a cinema' (missing an article: 'Watching a movie') and 'provide with relatively decent amount' (missing an object: 'provide users with'). Additionally, 'the option to watch online provides them with the benefit to move at their own pace' is slightly awkward. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Increasing the variety of complex structures while ensuring subject-verb agreement and article usage would improve this score.
