Student answer (Band 5.5)

In today's world of advance technology, few people say theatres and cinemas are less significant as people enjoy all types of entertainment at home in their comfort zone. While, some think they play a vital role in economy as well as in culture. Although they both are valid arguments, but I believe that theaters and cinemas are still really crucial.

Theaters and cinemas play a very vital role in a country's economy and culture. They are the main source of income for many desperate peoples every cinema holds hundreds of employees. Elderly people prefer theaters as it connects them back to their old culture and time. Theatres connects people with the past and it adds value to history. Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument regarding the economic importance of theatres is supported by a personal anecdote, but the explanation remains superficial. The essay also contains an incomplete sentence fragment ('The believe that theater and cinema') which disrupts the flow of the argument. While the position is consistent, the supporting points lack the depth and analytical rigor required for a higher band. To improve, ensure that each paragraph fully explores the implications of the arguments rather than relying on brief, anecdotal evidence.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into paragraphs, but the logical progression is occasionally hindered by abrupt transitions and repetitive phrasing. While cohesive devices like 'On the other hand' and 'In a nutshell' are used, they are sometimes applied mechanically. The paragraphing is inconsistent, with one paragraph being left incomplete. Referencing is generally clear, but the overall structure feels disjointed. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of linking words to connect ideas more fluidly and ensure that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence that is fully developed before moving to the next point.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the precision and range expected at higher levels. There is a reliance on basic terms such as 'vital role' and 'important', which are repeated throughout the text. Some word choices are slightly unnatural, such as 'desperate peoples' (likely meaning 'people in need') and 'advance technology' (should be 'advanced technology'). There are also minor errors in collocation. To improve, try to incorporate more academic collocations and synonyms to avoid repetition and demonstrate a more sophisticated command of the English language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('Theatres connects', 'theatre closed'), incorrect article usage, and the aforementioned sentence fragment. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with spacing after commas and periods. While the meaning is generally conveyed, the frequency of these errors prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. Focusing on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and ensuring all sentences are complete will significantly improve the quality of your writing.
