Student answer (Band 5.5)

People argue that theaters and cinemas do not hold much significance now because people can access the same form of entertainment at home on numerous streaming platforms online. By contrast, others argue that cinemas and theaters are still beneficial in many aspects, for example, economically and culturally which is why I believe that they still contribute to society.

On the one hand, due to the introduction of social media and how easily it is accessible many people prefer watching movies or dramas at home free of cost by just connecting to their home wifi. This also helps to minimize travel costs which can be a significant deciding factor. Furthermore, not being on time and not being able to bring in their desired snacks motivates them to stay at their own comfort at home.

On the other hand, theaters and cinemas have been a point of interest for many decades by attracting viewers to watch famous movies the day they are released. As a result, this leads to individuals spending substantial amounts of money to watch a single movie which then benefits the society to maintain economic stability making cinemas an efficient contributor to the cities economy. For example, people tend to follow trends by watching movies which have their favourite characters this enables them to spend money to give their share to the economy while also remaining up to date with the movie culture.

In conclusion, while staying at home and watching movies does provide financial benefits it comes with its own downsites and visiting a cinema not only helps you stay culturally knowledgeable but also motivates you to take part in raising your city's economy.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion in the introduction. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While you mention economic and cultural benefits, the cultural aspect is not fully explored or supported with specific examples. The economic argument is repetitive, focusing heavily on 'spending money' without explaining the broader cultural significance of theaters. To reach a higher band, ensure that each point is supported by a concrete example or a more detailed explanation. The conclusion is a bit brief and could have better summarized the main points to reinforce your position.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'Furthermore' are used to guide the reader. However, the transition between ideas within paragraphs could be smoother. For instance, the jump from 'travel costs' to 'snacks' in the second paragraph feels slightly disjointed. Additionally, some referencing is a bit mechanical. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each sentence flows naturally from the previous one would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your meaning, such as 'economic stability', 'numerous', and 'significant deciding factor'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'downsites' is incorrect (should be 'downsides'), and 'cities economy' requires an apostrophe ('city's economy'). Some phrases are a bit simplistic, such as 'give their share to the economy'. To improve, try to incorporate more precise academic collocations and ensure accurate spelling of common terms. The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the sophistication required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors. For example, 'how easily it is accessible' should be 'how easily accessible it is'. There are also punctuation issues, such as missing commas after introductory phrases and incorrect possessive forms. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on mastering complex sentence structures and proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and punctuation errors.
