Student answer (Band 5.5)

In the era of digital age and online platform, theatres and cinemas are facing a lot of challenges. The main reason behind this is the increased popularity of various online platforms. This essay will discuss both the aspects and the final point of view.

Theatres are the places where a group of people perform a skit in a designed settings. This help the artists to earn money from their perfromances. Through these artforms, people show their creative thinking skill, which reaches to the audience and help the entire artist community financially for showcasing the culture. Furthermore, the contribution of the people behind sound, light, make up is also immense. On the other hand, cinemas are important for screening of different movies. Unlike theatre, audience cant experience live performance of an artist. It also has been observed that many artists from theatre has switched to movies for gain a better visibility in public's eye. However, cinemas contribute profoundly in economy as the viewers are supposed to puchase tickets. Some of the halls also come with various other refreshments like popcorn, coffee to name a few. Visiting to cinema for a movie allows the other business to co exist. Other than that, watching a movie in a giant screen gives all of us an immense satisfaction rather than watching them online as those screens are equipped to cast both 2D and 3D type. A few months back, I went to watch a movie by Christopher Nolan which has been released in both 2D and 3D.

However, the online platform are becoming famous nowadays because people are willing to pay a similar amount for the subscription for the platform and watch as many movies as they want available on that and according to their convenience. Having access to the online platform enable us to watch movie anytime and anywhere, like while travelling, whereas visiting to cinemas expect punctuality. The main advantage of the online platform is viewer's access to any types of movies or series all across the world. People get exposed to more diverse kind of cultures.

In conclusion, with the growing popularity of technology and availibility of gadgets, the transformation from cinemas and theatre to online platform is beneficial as it saves time and gives accessibility to a vast range of movies and theatres in your preferred langauges.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a personal opinion, although the opinion is somewhat contradictory. While the introduction and body paragraphs discuss the importance of theatres and cinemas, the conclusion shifts to argue that the transformation to online platforms is 'beneficial,' which slightly undermines the earlier points about the cultural and economic importance of physical venues. The ideas are generally relevant, but some points, such as the description of theatre, are a bit simplistic. To improve, ensure your position is consistent throughout the essay and provide more depth in your supporting arguments regarding the economic and cultural impact of cinemas.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Furthermore,' 'On the other hand,' and 'In conclusion,' which help guide the reader. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical, and there are instances where the flow between sentences could be smoother. For example, the shift from discussing theatre to cinema in the second paragraph is slightly abrupt. Referencing is generally clear, but the logical progression within the conclusion could be strengthened to better reflect the arguments presented in the body paragraphs.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their ideas clearly. There is an attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'subscription,' 'accessibility,' and 'creative thinking skill.' However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'designed settings' instead of 'designed settings' or 'public's eye' instead of 'public eye.' Additionally, there are minor spelling errors like 'perfromances' and 'availibility.' To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise collocations and ensuring accurate spelling of academic vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the era of digital age'), subject-verb agreement ('theatre has switched'), and preposition usage ('visiting to cinema'). Some sentences are slightly awkward, such as 'This help the artists to earn money.' While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Increasing the variety of complex structures and proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy would significantly improve the score.
