Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some people believe that in this digital era, watching movies in theater and cinemas are no longer significant for the people as they have other options to watch online. Others consider that theatres and cinemas are still valuable for both cultural and economic activities. This essay will discuss both views and my perspective will be shared.

Firstly, the movie prices in theatres are more expensive and they are released in online platform after few weeks. People are subscribed to all the entertainment platforms to watch the newly released movies. This makes very convinient to watch the movie that they can pause & play whenever they want. Comparatively the price is cheap and affordable for everyone. For instance, the first day first show movie in the theatre will cost around 20 dollars however, the cost of the subscriptions is 50 dollars per year. In this lakhs of movies and TV shows will be available.

On the other hand, by theaters many are getting employed and some business are running on daily basis. The operator, lightman, technician, housekeeper, ticket checker and few food stall people are employed there and its boosting the economy. Online platforms can't beat the feel of watching a movie in a big screen will full crowded audience in theatre. Only in the theatre it will give you the sensory emotion and the excitement, whenever a mass sequence appears people used to whistle and celebrate moment. For example, my dad used to watch the movies only in theatres to get connected with scene and still continuing it for almost 50 years.

Overall, from my point of view the prices are higher and with the subscriptions people can watch the movie whenever they want, but only by watching a movie in theater will give you the feel and emotion to stay connected. So watching a movie in theatre is better when compared with watching it in online platform

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both the decline of cinemas due to digital alternatives and their ongoing economic and cultural importance. A clear position is maintained throughout, culminating in a personal conclusion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. While the economic argument regarding employment is relevant, the explanation of cultural importance relies heavily on personal anecdote rather than broader societal analysis. To reach a higher band, the arguments could be extended with more sophisticated reasoning, such as the role of cinemas in community building or the specific economic impact of the film industry beyond local staff employment.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two opposing viewpoints. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'On the other hand', and 'For instance' are used to guide the reader. However, the flow within paragraphs is occasionally mechanical, and some transitions between sentences feel abrupt. For example, the shift from discussing subscription costs to the number of movies available in the second paragraph lacks a smooth linking phrase. Improving the variety of cohesive devices would enhance the overall progression of ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their ideas clearly. There are attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary such as 'digital era', 'sensory emotion', and 'subscription platforms'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are instances of awkward phrasing or imprecise word choices, such as 'first day first show movie' and 'with full crowded audience'. The repetition of basic words like 'watch' and 'movie' suggests a need for a wider range of synonyms to demonstrate more flexibility and precision in expressing complex ideas.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('in theater', 'in the theatre'), subject-verb agreement ('some business are running'), and preposition usage. Some sentences are slightly clunky, such as 'In this lakhs of movies and TV shows will be available.' While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Increasing the use of error-free complex sentences and refining punctuation would significantly improve the grammatical profile of the writing.
