Student answer (Band 8.0)

The rapid growth of digital entertainment has made it possible for people to watch films, television programmes and other forms of entertainment from the comfort of their homes. While some people believe that this development has made theatres and cinemas unnecessary, others argue that these venues continue to have significant economic and cultural value. I believe that although online entertainment is more convenient, theatres and cinemas remain important and cannot be completely replaced by digital platforms.

On the one hand, there are several reasons why people consider theatres and cinemas less important today. The primary advantage of online entertainment is convenience. Streaming platforms allow users to watch a vast range of films and programmes at any time and often at a relatively low cost. People no longer need to travel to a cinema, purchase expensive tickets or follow a fixed schedule. Furthermore, technological developments have significantly improved the quality of home entertainment. Large televisions, high-quality sound systems and affordable streaming subscriptions enable individuals to enjoy an increasingly cinematic experience from their own homes. For busy people and families, this flexibility can be particularly attractive.

On the other hand, theatres and cinemas continue to provide important economic and cultural benefits. Cinemas create employment for a wide range of workers, including managers, technicians, cleaners and customer-service staff, while theatres support actors, musicians, directors and other creative professionals. More importantly, these venues provide a shared social experience that cannot be fully replicated online. Watching a film with a large audience or attending a live theatrical performance creates a sense of excitement and connection among spectators. Theatres also help preserve cultural traditions by showcasing local plays, music and performances that might otherwise receive little attention. For example, traditional theatrical productions can introduce younger generations to their country's history, language and cultural heritage.

In my opinion, digital entertainment and traditional venues should be viewed as complementary rather than competing forms of entertainment. Although online platforms are likely to become even more popular because of their convenience, cinemas and theatres offer unique social, emotional and cultural experiences. A live performance, in particular, cannot be reproduced simply by watching a recording on a screen.

In conclusion, while digital entertainment has made home viewing easier, cheaper and more convenient, theatres and cinemas remain valuable sources of employment, social interaction and cultural preservation. Therefore, I believe they will continue to play an important role in modern society despite the rapid expansion of online entertainment.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt. You have clearly discussed both perspectives—the convenience of digital entertainment versus the economic and cultural importance of physical venues—and provided a well-reasoned personal opinion. Your ideas are well-developed, particularly the distinction between the social experience of a cinema and the convenience of streaming. The position is consistent throughout the essay, and the conclusion effectively synthesizes the arguments presented. To reach a band 9, you could further extend the 'economic' argument by briefly mentioning the broader impact on local businesses or the tourism sector, but the current level of development is already strong for a band 8.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central topic sentence, and the transition between the two opposing views is smooth, using appropriate cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand'. Referencing is clear, and the use of linking words like 'Furthermore' and 'In conclusion' helps guide the reader through your argument. The paragraphing is logical and contributes to the overall clarity of the response. The flow is natural, and the relationship between ideas is consistently well-managed throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 8.0

You demonstrate a wide and flexible range of vocabulary that is appropriate for an academic discussion. Phrases such as 'replicated online', 'complementary rather than competing', and 'cultural preservation' show a good command of topic-specific language. You use less common items with precision, and there are no noticeable errors in word choice or collocation. The vocabulary is sophisticated enough to convey your meaning clearly and effectively. To move toward a higher band, you could incorporate more idiomatic or nuanced collocations, but the current range is already very strong and well-controlled.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0

The essay displays a wide range of grammatical structures, including complex sentences with subordinate clauses (e.g., 'Although online platforms are likely to become even more popular...'). The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation and tense usage is excellent. There are no significant grammatical slips that impede communication. The writing is fluent and demonstrates a high level of accuracy, which is consistent with the band 8 descriptor. You have successfully balanced simple and complex structures to maintain a professional and academic tone throughout the piece.
