Some people say that in the digital age, theatres and cinemas are no longer important as people can watch all the entertainment they want online. Others argue that theatres and cinemas are still important both economically and culturally.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In the era of digitalization, a handful of people say that theatres and cinemas are not needed anymore, as they can watch everything on online platforms. However, others oppose this argument and believe that cinemas and theaters are still vital for the economy and uphold cultural values. I will discuss both sides in the upcoming paragraphs along with my own opinion.
To begin with, Netflix, prime amazon, and other online platforms are in trending these days. Some people believe that there is no need to visit cinemas, because they can access the same movies and dramas at home. Most of the youngsters buy subscriptions to online entertainment sources instead of visiting cinemas. They feel that it is more comfortable and reasonable. For example, Netflix used to sell recorded CDs and DVDs of movies, however, due to a change in people's behaviour, they have changed their business to video subscriptions.
On the other hand, in the past, visiting cinemas was an activity that people liked to do with their friends and family to spend quality time with them. It automatically boosts the economy of the hospitality industry and reflects cultural norms. For example, a survey conducted by a news channel discovered that Bollywood and Hollywood actor/actresses were 50% more popular and talented in the past due to theatres.
To conclude, in my own opinion, I believe that visiting cinemas add a entertainment activity, rather than sitting at home watching Netflix. To feel more of the vibe of the movie and enjoy it, cinemas are crucial and adds up in the economy of the country.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument regarding the economic impact of cinemas is mentioned but lacks specific, well-explained details, relying on a vague reference to a survey. The conclusion is also quite brief and does not fully synthesize the points raised. To reach a higher band, you should aim to provide more depth in your supporting arguments, ensuring that each point is fully explored rather than just stated. The position is clear, but the supporting evidence needs more substance to be fully persuasive.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'On the other hand', and 'To conclude' are used to guide the reader through the text. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally repetitive. For example, the transition between the discussion of Netflix and the shift to the importance of cinemas could be smoother. While the paragraphing is appropriate, the internal cohesion within paragraphs could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that ideas follow one another more naturally.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to express your ideas clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'digitalization', 'online platforms', and 'hospitality industry'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'are in trending' (should be 'are trending') and 'adds up in the economy' (should be 'contributes to the economy'). The range is sufficient for the task, but to achieve a higher score, you should incorporate more precise and sophisticated vocabulary to avoid repetitive phrasing and demonstrate a better grasp of collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include 'a handful of people say' (which is slightly unnatural in this context), 'actor/actresses were' (subject-verb agreement and pluralization issues), and 'visiting cinemas add a entertainment activity' (subject-verb agreement error). Punctuation is mostly correct, but there are minor slips. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles. Increasing the frequency of error-free complex sentences will help you move into a higher band.
