Student answer (Band 6.0)

In recent years, the digital platforms have become increasingly popular for watching programs and movies. These platforms have become a major threat to traditional cinemas and theatres. Some people argue that cinemas and theatres are no longer important because people can access entertainment online, while others oppose that they are important because of economic and cultural benefits. In my opinion, cinemas and theatres should continue to operate because of their benefits towards the country, whereas the digital platforms should grow alongside to entertain people in the free time.

On the one hand, digital platforms play an important role during long journeys. This is because the people travel by train or airplane spend several hours to reach their destination, the internet facilities help passengers to pass the time. For example, if a person is traveling by a airplane, he or she has to reach an airport few hours prior to the departure time. In this situation the person has several hours of free time and can become bored. Watching movies and programs on the digital platforms can help to pass the time. In addition, the internet facilities make entertainment affordable for people on a lower income. If a person cannot afford to buy cinema tickets, they can watch movies and shows on the internet.

On the other hand, the critics argue that cinemas and theatres can be beneficial for the overall economy of the country. A significant amount of revenue is generated from the traditional cinemas and theatres. If cinemas get disappear, this source of revenue can be lost, which could negatively affect the economy. Furthermore, cinemas help to preserve and promote the national culture. Traditional plays, movies and documentaries can provide knowledge about the nation's history and culture to younger generations. For instance, the digital platforms often promotes the internationally common dances such as hip-hop and break-dance, but traditional dances such Bhangra and Kathak can be usually promoted with the help of traditional cinemas.

In conclusion, both the digital platforms and cinemas remain important. A balanced approach works best. Digital platforms can provide entertainment anywhere and anytime, while cinemas and theatres can benefit the country in terms of overall economy and preserving national culture.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all parts of the prompt by discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion in the introduction and conclusion. Your ideas are relevant and generally well-supported, particularly the economic and cultural arguments for traditional venues. However, the development of the 'digital platforms' argument is slightly narrow, focusing primarily on travel convenience rather than the broader cultural or social implications of digital consumption. To reach a higher band, ensure that your supporting points are balanced in depth across both sides of the argument. Your position is consistent throughout the essay, which is a key requirement for a strong task response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use a range of cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand,' 'In addition,' and 'Furthermore' to guide the reader through your arguments. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the two viewpoints. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing, such as 'If cinemas get disappear,' which disrupts the flow. Improving the variety and sophistication of your linking phrases would help achieve a more natural, fluid progression of ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with some precision, using terms like 'digital platforms,' 'revenue,' and 'preserve and promote.' There are some instances of slightly unnatural word choices or minor errors, such as 'If cinemas get disappear' (should be 'disappear') and 'internationally common dances.' While your vocabulary is adequate for the task, you rely on some repetitive phrasing. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations and less common lexical items related to the arts and economics to demonstrate a higher level of control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this level. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'the people travel by train' (should be 'people traveling'), 'by a airplane' (should be 'by an airplane'), and 'often promotes' (should be 'often promote'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles. Increasing the frequency of error-free complex sentences will help demonstrate better control over your grammatical range.
