Student answer (Band 8.0)
Some people believe that theatres and cinemas have become less important in the digital era because entertainment is easily accessible online. Others argue that these venues continue to play a significant role in society. This essay will discuss both perspectives before explaining why I believe theatres and cinemas remain valuable despite the growth of online streaming.
On the one hand, many people think that theatres and cinemas are no longer essential due to the convenience of digital platforms. Streaming services such as Netflix, Disney+, and YouTube allow viewers to watch a wide variety of films, television shows, and live performances anytime and anywhere. This convenience saves both time and money, as people do not need to travel or purchase expensive tickets. Furthermore, technological advances have enabled people to enjoy high-quality sound and picture at home, making online entertainment an attractive alternative to traditional venues. As a result, many cinemas and theatres have experienced a decline in audience numbers.
On the other hand, theatres and cinemas continue to provide unique experiences that cannot be fully replicated online. Watching a film on a large screen with immersive sound or enjoying a live theatrical performance creates a shared atmosphere that enhances audience engagement. In addition, these venues contribute significantly to local economies by creating employment opportunities for actors, technicians, ticket sellers, and other staff. From a cultural perspective, theatres preserve traditional art forms, promote local talent, and encourage creativity within communities. They also serve as important social spaces where people can gather and share memorable experiences.
In my opinion, although online entertainment has transformed the way people consume media, theatres and cinemas still have an important place in modern society. Digital platforms should be viewed as a complement rather than a replacement for these institutions. While streaming services offer convenience and affordability, they cannot reproduce the emotional connection and cultural significance of experiencing live performances or watching films in a cinema with others.
In conclusion, although the digital age has reduced people's dependence on traditional entertainment venues, theatres and cinemas continue to make valuable economic and cultural contributions. Therefore, I believe they will remain relevant and should be supported alongside the continued growth of online entertainment.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response fully addresses all parts of the task. You have clearly discussed both perspectives—the convenience of online streaming versus the economic and cultural value of physical venues—and provided a clear, consistent personal opinion throughout the essay. The ideas are well-developed and supported with relevant examples, such as the mention of specific streaming platforms and the economic impact on local staff. The conclusion effectively synthesises your position, ensuring the response is balanced and comprehensive. You have met all requirements of the prompt with a logical and well-structured argument.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The essay is logically organised with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and you have used cohesive devices effectively to link sentences and paragraphs, such as 'On the one hand', 'Furthermore', and 'In addition'. The transition between the discussion of the two views and your own opinion is smooth and natural. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different stages of your argument. The flow of information is easy to follow, and the use of referencing is precise, ensuring that the reader is never confused about the direction of your argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.5
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary that is appropriate for an academic context. Phrases such as 'immersive sound', 'replicated online', and 'cultural significance' show a level of precision and sophistication. While the vocabulary is accurate and fits the topic well, it could be further elevated by incorporating more idiomatic or less common collocations to reach the highest band. However, the current range is sufficient to convey your ideas clearly and effectively, and there are no errors in word choice or spelling that impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0
The essay displays a wide range of grammatical structures, including complex sentences with subordinate clauses (e.g., 'Although online entertainment has transformed...'). The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation and tense is consistent. There are no significant grammatical slips that distract the reader. The structure is varied, moving between simple, compound, and complex sentences, which keeps the writing engaging and professional. Your command of English grammar is strong and supports the clarity of your arguments throughout the piece.
