Student answer (Band 5.0)

It is a matter of debate wheather some people prefer going to cinema and theaters and other prefer not to go as they can watch it online without going there.

Some people does not want to waste their money in a cinema or theater as they want to watch it online. You can not skip any part in which you are not interested. So [you] cannot pause it if you want to use washroom. Some people does not like to watch a movie in a crowded area. I have a friend his name is Rashid and he never goes to cinema with us. He says that he can watch that movie from his phone for free and does not want to spend money for a ticket. He also gets quiet uncomfortable in a crowded environment.

However there are some people who likes to go to cinema. And I myself is one of them. We can have fun watching a movie in cinema.

The huge speakers and large T.V makes it more fun. The huge speakers makes the movie more realistic. Going to cinema with friends and cousin is a whole new experience. Watching a movie in cinema with friends is worth every penney. For example I go to cinema with my friends group atleast once a month. We eat popcorn there and enjoy the movie. The fun we cannot have at home.

In my opinion going to cinema is quiet fun if you are in a right friend circle. And i agree that they are still important both economically and culturally

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a personal opinion, meeting the basic requirements of the task. However, the development of ideas is quite limited. The arguments regarding the convenience of online streaming versus the social and sensory experience of cinemas are repetitive and lack depth. For instance, the point about 'huge speakers' is mentioned twice in the same paragraph. The explanation of economic and cultural importance is mentioned only in the final sentence without any supporting evidence or elaboration. To improve, you should expand on the economic impact (e.g., job creation, local business revenue) and cultural significance (e.g., community gathering, artistic appreciation) to provide a more balanced and thorough discussion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is organized into paragraphs, but the logical progression is weak. The transition between the two viewpoints is abrupt, and the internal structure of the paragraphs is disjointed. While some cohesive devices are used (e.g., 'However', 'For example'), they are often used mechanically or incorrectly. The referencing is sometimes unclear, such as the sudden introduction of a personal anecdote about a friend named Rashid, which feels disconnected from the broader argument. The use of paragraphing is present but does not effectively group related ideas, leading to a somewhat fragmented reading experience. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring each paragraph has a clear topic sentence would enhance the flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is basic and repetitive, which limits the ability to convey complex ideas. Words like 'fun', 'watch', and 'cinema' are used repeatedly throughout the text. There are also issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'quiet uncomfortable' (should be 'quite') and 'friend circle' (more naturally 'social circle'). While the meaning is generally clear, the range of vocabulary is insufficient to demonstrate the flexibility required for higher bands. To improve, you should aim to incorporate more precise synonyms and academic collocations related to the topic of entertainment and technology.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow of reading. There are consistent issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'Some people does not', 'The huge speakers makes') and spelling errors (e.g., 'wheather', 'penney'). The sentence structures are predominantly simple, with very few attempts at complex sentences. When complex structures are attempted, they often contain errors in punctuation or clause construction. To improve, focus on mastering basic subject-verb agreement, correct spelling of common words, and practicing the use of complex sentence structures like relative clauses or conditional sentences to add variety to your writing.
