Student answer (Band 7.0)

In this digital age, people can easily acess movies and tv programs onlin. While some people argue that this made cinemas unnecessary and others says these places are important for economy and culture. I wll explain both in the upcoming paragraph.

On the one hand, online entertainment has made it much easier for people to enjoy their favourite content at home. Streaming platforms allow users to watch films and shows whenever they want, without travelling to a cinema or paying for expensive tickets. In addition, watching entertainment online is often more comfortable and convenient because people can pause a film, choose their preferred time and watch it on different devices. For example, a family can watch a newly released film at home without having to travel to a cinema. As a result, some people feel that traditional cinemas are becoming less necessary.

On the other hand, theatres and cinemas continue to have significant economic and cultural importance. Cinemas provide employment for many people, including ticket staff, cleaners, technicians and managers. They also generate income for restaurants, shops and other businesses located nearby. Furthermore, theatres and cinemas offer a shared social experience that online entertainment cannot fully replace. Watching a film with a large audience or attending a live theatrical performance can create excitement and emotional connections between people. Cinemas also help promote local films and preserve cultural traditions by giving audiences an opportunity to experience different languages, stories and perspectives.

In my opinion, although online entertainment is more convenient, theatres and cinemas will remain important. Rather than completely replacing traditional entertainment, digital platforms are likely to exist alongside them. Many people will continue to watch everyday entertainment online while choosing cinemas or theatres for special occasions and memorable experiences.

In conclusion, online entertainment offers convenience, affordability and flexibility, which has reduced people's dependence on cinemas and theatres. However, these places still provide economic benefits, cultural value and unique social experiences. Therefore, I believe they will continue to play an important role despite the growth of digital entertainment.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed all parts of the prompt, discussing both perspectives and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the economic and cultural arguments in the second body paragraph. The introduction clearly outlines the structure of the essay, and the conclusion effectively synthesizes your position. To reach a higher band, ensure that your personal opinion is integrated more explicitly throughout the body paragraphs rather than just in the dedicated paragraph, as this would demonstrate a more consistent and sustained position. Overall, the response is well-focused and directly answers the task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and you have used a range of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'On the one hand', 'In addition', and 'Furthermore'. The transition between the arguments for online entertainment and the counter-arguments for cinemas is smooth. The paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the overall clarity of the response. To improve, you could vary your cohesive devices slightly more to avoid a somewhat formulaic structure, but the current usage is already quite effective and clear.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with precision. Phrases like 'shared social experience', 'preserve cultural traditions', and 'digital platforms' are used accurately. There are a few minor spelling errors, such as 'acess' and 'onlin', which are likely slips rather than a lack of knowledge. To achieve a higher band, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations or less common idiomatic expressions related to the topic of media and economics. However, your current vocabulary is adequate and allows for clear communication of your ideas throughout the essay.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are error-free, and your control of grammar is generally strong. There are a few minor slips, such as 'others says' (should be 'others say') and 'I wll' (typo). These errors are infrequent and do not impede communication. To reach a higher band, you could experiment with more complex grammatical structures, such as inversion or conditional sentences, to demonstrate greater flexibility. Overall, the grammatical accuracy is high, and the writing is easy to follow.
