Student answer (Band 6.0)

Digitalization has brought a significant impact to the theatres and cinemas. The importance of theatres and cinemas have been threatened with the emergence of new online platforms.

The theatres and cinemas play a crucial cultural role in a country. It being a main attraction among tourists who visit the country strengthen its importance economically as well.

In my opinion theatres and cinemas are important because of the experience it gives to the people. The simple sentence of "let's go to cinema, wanna come ?" has been romanticized from an ancient time, which is never replaceable by online platforms such as Netflix, Disney+ etc. Further more there are so many pieces showed through theatres, and cinemas. Not just a movie, but ballets, opera have been performed in theatres since a long time. In my experience watching a new movie, for the first in a cinema, with a pop corn is irreplaceable by watching it on Prime Video, same with watching Magic flute in a theatre rather than watching it online.

However, there's a fact that maintaining cinemas, and theatres is expensive. I agree in that POV, because for people to watch on Netflix it might only cost for the device and a monthly subscription.

Overall, Cinemas and Theatres have an importance culturally, and economically as it being a piece of a country's cultural identity, but with its own drawbacks as maintaining

But I would stand on the side to preserve the value of cinemas and theatres, because the cultural divergence is never the same with online platforms.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both views and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While you mention the cultural and economic importance of cinemas, the arguments remain quite general. For instance, the point about 'tourists' is mentioned but not expanded upon with specific examples or logical depth. Similarly, the economic argument regarding maintenance costs is introduced but lacks a balanced discussion. To reach a higher band, you should aim to provide more detailed explanations and concrete examples for each perspective, ensuring that the 'economic' and 'cultural' aspects are fully explored rather than just stated.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the progression of ideas is sometimes disjointed. The use of cohesive devices is basic and occasionally repetitive (e.g., 'In my opinion', 'However', 'Overall'). Some transitions between sentences are abrupt, such as the shift from the cultural role to the personal experience section. The paragraphing is functional, but the logical flow between the two sides of the argument could be improved by using more sophisticated linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear, unified focus.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the range and precision required for a higher band. You use some common phrases like 'significant impact' and 'cultural identity', but there is a reliance on simpler language. There are also some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'pieces showed through theatres' (should be 'performances staged in theatres') and 'the simple sentence of' (should be 'the simple phrase'). To improve, try to incorporate more topic-specific vocabulary related to the arts and economics, and pay closer attention to natural collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('The importance of theatres and cinemas have been threatened') and punctuation errors (e.g., unnecessary spaces before question marks and commas). The use of articles and prepositions is also inconsistent. While you attempt complex sentences, they are often marred by these errors. To improve, focus on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy and ensuring that your complex sentences are constructed with precision.
