Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, reaching only 207 words. This significantly impacts the development of ideas. While the essay addresses both sides of the argument, the points are underdeveloped and lack sufficient supporting evidence or examples. The position is stated in the introduction but is not consistently maintained or clearly articulated throughout the body paragraphs. The conclusion is also very brief and does not effectively summarize the arguments or provide a final synthesis of the writer's opinion. To improve, the student needs to expand on each point with specific examples and ensure the word count is met.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into paragraphs, which is a positive step. However, the use of cohesive devices is mechanical and sometimes inaccurate, such as the repetitive use of 'Therefore' and 'On the one hand/other hand' without smooth transitions between sentences. The logical progression of ideas is hindered by the brevity of the paragraphs and the lack of clear linking between the arguments and the topic sentences. Referencing is occasionally unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the flow of the argument. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring each paragraph has a clear, unified focus would enhance coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is limited and repetitive, relying on basic terms like 'important', 'good', and 'causes'. There are several instances of word-choice errors and awkward phrasing, such as 'they consume time for travel' instead of 'they save time on travel' and 'there living people' instead of 'their local community'. The range of vocabulary is insufficient to express complex ideas effectively. To reach a higher band, the student should focus on using more precise academic vocabulary and collocations, and ensure that words are used in their correct context to convey meaning accurately.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede communication. There are issues with subject-verb agreement, such as 'some individual think', and incorrect sentence structures, such as 'I believe both views and give own opinion'. Punctuation is also problematic, with inconsistent spacing before commas and periods. The range of grammatical structures is very limited, consisting mostly of simple sentences. There is a lack of complex sentence structures, which are necessary for higher band scores. The student needs to focus on basic sentence construction, subject-verb agreement, and the correct use of articles and prepositions.
