Student answer (Band 6.0)

Society often debates whether in the modern age, theatres and cinemas are no longer needed due to availability of online resources or these are still important in terms of affordability and cultural values. In my opinion, a balance between both views is the best approach.

On the one hand, there are those who believe that online resources are the replacement of cinemas and theatres. In recent years, people can access any kind of entertainment through internet and they can watch any movie on online platforms like Netflix, Netmirror and YouTube. As they are available all over the world, it is the most convenient way for the people especially disabled people. For example, people can watch any type of movie in any language while sitting in their home, without paying for cinema tickets. Consequently, people can enjoy entertainment at any time due to technological advancement.

On the other hand, certain people argue that cinemas and theaters are still important in terms of affordability and traditional identity. As it is not easy for everyone to access entertainments online because they cost high internet bills and these apps are not always free. For instance, Netflix app demands a high-cost subscription before watching a movie, which is often in thousands of rupees compared to cinemas tickets. Therefore, it is not a cost-effective option; presence of traditional cinemas and theaters are also important for developing a sense of belonging in society and offer majority of the people to enjoy entertainment.

From my perspective, both views have merits and demerits which is why a balanced approach is necessary. For instance, internet availability is a good option for people who can not go to cinemas or theaters or having busy schedule, while these cinemas or theaters are also important for people who cannot afford subscriptions.

In conclusion, due to technological advancement online resources make it easy for people to enjoy entertainments but it could not completely replace the traditional cinemas and theaters that are good approaches for person’s economy and social identity.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, though some arguments are slightly under-developed. For instance, the claim that cinema tickets are cheaper than Netflix subscriptions is a questionable premise that lacks logical support, which weakens the persuasiveness of the argument. While the position is consistent throughout, the development of the 'economic' and 'cultural' importance of cinemas could have been more nuanced. To reach a higher band, ensure that the supporting examples are grounded in logical reality and that the discussion of the two sides is balanced in depth.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. The use of cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', 'For instance', and 'Consequently' is generally effective. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally repetitive. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different viewpoints. The progression of ideas is clear, though the link between the final conclusion and the preceding arguments could be more tightly integrated to improve the overall flow of the essay.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their ideas clearly. There are attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'technological advancement', 'cost-effective', and 'social identity'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are occasional inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'access entertainments' (entertainment is an uncountable noun here) and 'offer majority of the people' (which is grammatically awkward). To improve, the writer should focus on more precise collocations and avoid repeating basic terms like 'entertainment' and 'people' too frequently.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent minor errors in grammar, such as 'these are still important' (referring to cinemas/theatres), 'presence of traditional cinemas... are' (subject-verb agreement error), and 'people who can not go... or having busy schedule' (parallelism error). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but the control over complex structures is not yet consistent enough for a higher band. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles would significantly improve the accuracy of the writing.
