IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that in the digital age, theatres and cinemas are no longer important as people can watch all the entertainment they want online. Others argue that theatres and cinemas are still important both economically and culturally.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The advancement in technology has largely affected the way people consume entertainment. As a result there is an ongoing debate that cinemas are no longer valuable due to emerging streaming platforms. In my opinion, it is true that the convenience of streaming platforms makes them popular way of consuming entertainment. Nevertheless, it can never totally replace cinemas as a form of consuming entertainment.
On the one hand, the growth of streaming platforms has made watching films significantly convenient. Individuals can access a vast range of cinematic content from the comfort of their home. Moreover, on demand services allow viewers to choose what they want to watch and when they want to watch, making entertainment more personalized. As a result, people may choose to visit cinemas less frequently because digital platforms offers convenient alternatives which fits into their daily routine.
On the other hand, cinemas offer an experience which cannot be completely replicated at home. Watching a film on a large screen with high quality sound create a more immersive experience, allowing viewers to fully engage in story. In addition, going to cinema is often a social activity. Friends and family can spend time together , share their experience and enjoy a film as a collective experience. Therefore, cinemas can provide both entertainment and social interaction, rather than simply a way of watching films.
Furthermore, cinemas often play a cultural role, any film release attract viewers to experience it on large screen and share their excitement together. Although streaming services are likely to remain popular this does not necessarily mean that traditional cinemas will disappear completely.
In conclusion. streaming platforms has made watching films more convenient by providing personalized and on demand access to entertainment, which had reduced the frequency of cinema visits for some people. Nevertheless, cinemas provide an immersive and social experience that home viewing cannot fully reproduce. Therefore, i believe that cinemas remain relevant despite the rapid growth of digital entertainment.
