Student answer (Band 6.5)

This essays will discuss why digital age, theatres and cinemas are no longer essential because individuals now have access to online platforms to watch all types of entertainment, whereas others believe that theatres and cinemas are still economically and traditionally important.

We live in an advanced world and technology has taken over every thing. I strongly believe that people don’t have to go to the theatre or cinemas to watch movies or plays because they can easily watch them using an online platforms such as Netflix or Apple TV. Technology has provided individuals with tools such as phones, iPads and laptops where they can easily search for any type of play or film they want to see. In the past, people had to go to the theatre to watch new movies due to lack of movie websites and internet but Internet is now easily accessible and available to everybody to watch a new movie or see a play. Also, people are more comfortable watching movies in their homes rather than going to the cinemas.

Others argue that movie theatres are still traditionally and economical important. This is because going to the cinema encourages people from different traditions to meet one another. This encourages cultural bonding and helps to maintain one’s culture. Moreover, it is also important economically because it helps to increase profit in the cinema business and also generates money for the country through taxes paid by the cinemas. Therefore, there will be an increase in the profit and revenue generated from the theatres, if people continue to go there to watch films. It is economically beneficial to both the theatre business and the country.

In conclusion, I strongly agree that it is not necessary to go to the theatre or cinemas to watch a movie. However, going to the cinema to watch a film is still important economically and culturally because it increases profit for the cinema business and it brings people from different cultures together.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The position is consistent throughout the essay. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While the arguments regarding convenience and economic benefits are relevant, they could be extended with more specific examples or deeper analysis to reach a higher band. For instance, the economic argument is repetitive, focusing mainly on 'profit' and 'revenue' without exploring the broader cultural impact or the specific challenges cinemas face in the digital age. The ideas are relevant but remain at a somewhat superficial level.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central topic, such as the convenience of digital platforms or the economic importance of cinemas. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Moreover', 'Therefore', and 'In the past', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally repetitive. The progression of ideas is clear, but the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and better referencing to avoid repeating the same nouns.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to express their ideas clearly. There is an attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'cultural bonding', 'economically beneficial', and 'online platforms'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are instances of slightly unnatural word choices or minor errors, such as 'traditionally and economical important' (should be 'economically'). To improve, the student should aim for more precise collocations and a wider variety of academic vocabulary to avoid repeating basic terms like 'important' or 'watch'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors throughout the text. For example, 'This essays will discuss' (subject-verb agreement), 'every thing' (should be one word), 'an online platforms' (article error), and 'due to lack of movie websites' (missing article). These errors are frequent but do not impede communication. To reach a higher band, the student needs to demonstrate more consistent control over complex structures and pay closer attention to basic grammatical accuracy, particularly with articles and subject-verb agreement.
