Some people say that in the digital age, theatres and cinemas are no longer important as people can watch all the entertainment they want online. Others argue that theatres and cinemas are still important both economically and culturally.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

According to my opinion in the digital age theaters and cinemas are no longer in use beacause nowadays people can watch all kinds of movies, dramas, series etc on thier electronic devices like computer or mobile phone. As a result the theatres and cinemas are no longer popular and essential than it used to be.People can watch their favourite shows online by taking premium subscriptions and enjoy watching the shows. As everything is nearby people donot need to go outside for watching a particular show or cinema offline that also saves transport fees and the time needed to reach the destination.

On the other hand,if I have to talk about the theatres and cinemas exist nowadays, those are less popular now .As result numbers of cinema halls and theaters has decreased over time causing the owners of the cinemas and theatres face financial crisis. If the cinema halls and theatres do not modernised with time then they will be no longer existed in the near future. As time passes some things needed to be go with flow otherwise it can stand up with the modern technologies. It is quite tough for the cinemas and theatres to perform better than advantages the online services provides. There was a when the cinemas and and theatres used to full with faces enjoying the shows or cinemas with popcorns and other snack items. After the rise of the internet,it became the main competitor of the two popular forms of entertainment providers.

At the end it can be said that,I agree with the statement that says that theatres and cinemas has become not only less essential but also less popular because of the onlline entertainment system.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The student addresses the task by discussing both views regarding the relevance of theatres and cinemas in the digital age and articulates a personal opinion. However, the arguments supporting the points are somewhat underdeveloped and lack specific examples or detailed reasoning. For instance, the statement about saving travel costs could be expanded with additional insights about changing consumer behaviors. This lack of depth limits the overall task achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay has a basic structure with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. However, coherence suffers due to abrupt transitions, such as "On the other hand" without clear segmentation of ideas. In addition, the use of linking words is minimal and could be improved for better flow and organization within and between paragraphs. Punctuation errors also disrupt the flow, such as "...need to go outside for watching a particular show..." which is awkwardly phrased.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used in the response is generally appropriate, but there are instances of informal phrases and some lexical errors that impede clarity, such as "theatres and cinemas are no longer in use" which could be stated more formally as "theatres and cinemas are becoming increasingly obsolete." There are misspellings like "beacause" and "onlline," which affect the overall impression. More varied and advanced vocabulary would enhance the discussion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The grammatical range is somewhat limited. There are several basic sentence structures used as opposed to a mix of complex and compound sentences, which would improve the sophistication of the writing. There are also noticeable errors in agreement and usage, such as "those are less popular now" which should be more clearly stated. Additionally, the incorrect past tense "there was a when the cinemas..." lacks clarity. These issues hinder effective communication.

Overall feedback

The response effectively discusses the topic by presenting both views on the importance of theatres and cinemas in the age of digital entertainment. However, to reach a higher band score, it is essential to strengthen your arguments with more specific examples or data that supports your points. Improving coherence through better transitions and clear paragraphing will also help your readers follow your line of thought more easily. Lastly, enhancing vocabulary by avoiding redundancy and correcting misspellings will improve clarity and professionalism in your writing.
