IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that in the digital age, theatres and cinemas are no longer important as people can watch all the entertainment they want online. Others argue that theatres and cinemas are still important both economically and culturally.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 8.0)

The proliferation of streaming platforms has led some to question whether physical theatres and cinemas still have a place in modern entertainment, given that virtually any film, play or performance can now be accessed from home. While the convenience of online entertainment is undeniable, I believe that theatres and cinemas remain vital to both the economy and cultural life, and are unlikely to become obsolete.

Those who argue that theatres and cinemas have lost their relevance point to the sheer convenience and affordability of digital streaming. Services such as Netflix or Disney+ allow viewers to watch an almost limitless catalogue of films and shows at any time, without the expense of tickets, travel or scheduling constraints. During the COVID-19 pandemic, many people grew accustomed to home viewing, and this shift in habit has, for some, permanently reduced the appeal of venturing out to a cinema or theatre. Given these practical advantages, it is understandable why some consider physical venues increasingly redundant.

Nevertheless, those who defend the continued importance of theatres and cinemas raise equally compelling points. Economically, these venues sustain a substantial ecosystem of jobs, ranging from actors, directors and technicians to ushers, projectionists and hospitality staff, while also generating vital revenue for surrounding businesses such as restaurants and parking facilities. Culturally, live theatre offers an irreplaceable, unrepeatable experience, as each performance is shaped by the immediate energy between performers and audience, something no recorded broadcast can replicate. Cinemas, too, provide a communal experience, from the immersive scale of the big screen to the shared emotional reactions of an audience, that streaming a film alone at home simply cannot match.

In my view, theatres and cinemas continue to serve a distinct and valuable purpose precisely because they offer something online entertainment cannot: a shared, immersive and often ephemeral experience. Just as reading a physical book offers a different experience from consuming an audiobook despite similar content, watching a film in a cinema or a play in a theatre engages audiences in ways fundamentally different from solitary screen-based viewing at home.

In conclusion, while digital streaming has undoubtedly transformed how people consume entertainment, I do not believe it renders theatres and cinemas obsolete. Their continued economic contribution and irreplaceable cultural value ensure that they will remain an important, if evolving, part of the entertainment landscape.
