Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the cost-effectiveness of streaming versus the 'vibe' of cinemas. However, the development is somewhat uneven. While the economic impact is mentioned, the cultural aspect is touched upon briefly but lacks depth. The argument for the importance of cinemas could be more robustly supported with more specific examples beyond just naming movies. Overall, the position is consistent, but the depth of analysis is more characteristic of a Band 6.0 response.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Moreover', 'In addition', and 'On the other hand', though some transitions feel a bit mechanical. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but there are instances where the flow is slightly disrupted by awkward phrasing, such as the transition between the economic and cultural points in the third paragraph. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different viewpoints, which helps the reader follow the argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to express ideas clearly. There are attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'subscription', 'economical growth', and 'blockbuster'. However, there are several instances of imprecise word choice and collocation errors, such as 'give contribution in economical growth', 'keen of watch', and 'found on theaters'. These errors do not impede communication, but they limit the range and precision of the language, keeping the score in the 6.0 range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('in theatres'), subject-verb agreement ('it play crucial role'), and verb forms ('keen of watch'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are minor slips throughout. The complexity of the sentences is limited, and the errors are noticeable enough to prevent a higher band score, though they rarely cause confusion for the reader.
