Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is said by some people that cinemas and theatres are no longer important in digital age because all the entertainment that people want to watch, is available online. Other people believe that theatres and cinemas are very important both economically and culturally. I am strongly inclined towards the ideology of other set of people.

People watch movies in cinemas because of the experience they get. Movie CDs are available in market since a long time. Still many people preferred watching movies from theatres. The emotions conveyed in movies reach people heart more if they watch the movie from cinemas. Even goosebumps are felt by some people. Other than that, filmmakers are benefited more if people watch the movie in cinema and not online. The higher expected earnings motivate creators to increase their budget. As a result, better movies are produced. The movie Oppenheimer is a perfect example of this. The budget of this movie was so high that the director, Christophar Nolan performed actual bomb-blast to show a movie scene. He could have used CGI for that scene. This all happened because he knew that many people would watch this film in theatres.

However, some people are very busy to allocate their time and energy to watch a movie in cinemas. After a long working day, they prefer to watch movie or series at their comfort. They are fine with not getting cinema experience. They just want to relax and enjoy the content laying on the bed, eating popcorn. This is the reason why online streaming platforms are getting more popular day-by-day. In recent times, web series are becoming more popular. This is because, it has capacity to provide entertainment to people who prefer watching content online.

As a result, it can be said that, even though watching movies online provide a relaxing experience, people should watch movies in theatres to motivate creators.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the economic impact on film production and the convenience of streaming. However, the development is somewhat uneven. The example of 'Oppenheimer' is a strong, specific illustration, but the explanation of the 'economic' importance could be more nuanced. The conclusion is a bit brief and does not fully synthesise the arguments presented. Overall, the position is clear throughout, and the response meets the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organised into paragraphs, each with a clear central topic. There is a progression of ideas from the introduction to the body paragraphs and the conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'However', 'As a result', and 'Other than that', though some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Referencing is generally clear, although the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to connect ideas more fluidly. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different viewpoints.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task. The student uses some topic-specific terms like 'filmmakers', 'streaming platforms', and 'CGI'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'reach people heart' (should be 'reach people's hearts') and 'allocate their time and energy to watch' (which is slightly unnatural). The vocabulary is generally functional but lacks the sophistication or precision required for a higher band. There are no significant spelling errors that impede communication, but the lexical range remains somewhat limited.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'in digital age' (missing article), 'since a long time' (incorrect tense usage), and 'people preferred' (should be 'people prefer'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but there are minor errors with commas and articles throughout. The student demonstrates an ability to construct complex sentences, but the control over these structures is inconsistent, leading to a number of small errors that persist throughout the text.
