Student answer (Band 5.5)

In many parts of the world, people are having different opinions about theatres and cinemas. Some people think, entertainments can easily be watched on the internet, while others think visiting theatres and cinemas it will help economically and culturally. I strongly agree with visiting cinemas and theatres, as they give as a different experience of joy.

One advantage in this digital age, watching entertainment has become easily accessible to all, anytime and anywhere. Either on a dedicated website or a mobile application. For instance, nowadays people can pay a small monthly subscription fee to websites like Netflix, and they can access to a library full of movies, dramas, documentaries and so on, which they can watch as per their convenient. Thus, it could also lead to laziness or over spending several hours watching while neglecting studies or daily chores.

On the other hand, there are people who don't enjoy the small screen at home, or maybe the atmosphere isn't the same as cinemas and theatres. Which makes them visit the places to enjoy the premium streaming or the live performance. Moreover, visiting theaters and cinemas, it does economically support movies production, or helps to pay the actors, and the rest of the team.

To conclude, even though people are arguing over watching all the entertainment they want online or visiting them at cinemas and movies, both have advantages and disadvantages, but in my opinion, i support visiting cinemas and theatre, as they give us different experiences, like watching a new released movie maybe in 5D, or enjoying a live performance of Chinese dance.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses both views and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While you mention the economic benefits of cinemas, the explanation is brief and lacks depth. The discussion on the digital age is better supported with the example of Netflix, but the argument could be strengthened by exploring the cultural significance of theatres more thoroughly. To reach a higher band, ensure that each main point is fully extended with specific reasoning or examples rather than just stating them. Your position is consistent throughout the essay, which is a positive aspect of your writing.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. You use some cohesive devices such as 'On the other hand', 'For instance', and 'To conclude' to guide the reader. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally hindered by awkward phrasing, such as 'Which makes them visit the places...' starting a new sentence. Additionally, some referencing is slightly unclear, and the transition between the economic argument and the cultural argument could be smoother. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that sentences are connected more fluidly would enhance the overall coherence of your response.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'subscription fee', 'documentaries', and 'premium streaming'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'give as a different experience' (should be 'give us') and 'watching entertainment' (which is slightly unnatural; 'consuming media' or 'watching content' would be better). Some phrasing is repetitive, and there is a lack of more sophisticated or precise vocabulary that would elevate the essay. Focusing on collocations and more academic synonyms will help you move into the higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include 'visiting theatres and cinemas it will help' (redundant subject 'it'), 'as per their convenient' (should be 'convenience'), and 'new released movie' (should be 'newly released'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some issues with sentence fragments and comma usage. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of adverbial forms. The majority of your sentences are understandable, but the error rate is noticeable.
