Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is an undeniable fact that theatres and cinemas plays a paramount role in today's life but some people say that in the digital age, theatres and cinemas are no longer important. The essay will discuss for both how online platforms have became ubiquitous, though cinemas and theatres have their own cultural importance.

It is an irrefutable fact that, there are several reasons why people think that theatres and cinemas are no longer necessary. Firstly, the internet provides people with a large amount of entertainment at a much lower cost. For example, people can watch movies, TV shows and other videos on platforms such as Netflix and YouTube from their homes. Secondly, online entertainment is more convenient because people do not need to travel to a cinema or wait for a particular show time. They can watch their favourite programmes whenever they want. Therefore, online platforms can save both time and money for many people.

On the other hand, theatres and cinemas still have an important role in society. From an economic point of view, they provide employment to many people, such as actors, directors, technicians and cinema staff. They also support other businesses, including restaurants and shops located near cinemas. In addition, theatres are important for maintaining culture and traditions. Moreover, live theatre performances can show traditional stories, music and local culture that may not have the same effect when watched online. Moreover, watching a movie in a cinema provides a different experience because people can enjoy a large screen and good sound with their friends or family.

The inexorable description on this subject matter can keep on going but observing the finer nuance and keeping a deep reverence for the fact, I would like to espouse my notion that online platforms have became ubiquitous, though cinemas and theatres have their own cultural importance.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The essay addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both perspectives and providing a personal opinion. However, the position is somewhat weak. In the introduction, you state that theatres have cultural importance, but in the conclusion, you merely repeat the prompt's premise rather than clearly synthesising your own stance. While the ideas regarding economic benefits and convenience are relevant and well-supported, the conclusion lacks a decisive final argument, which prevents the response from reaching a higher band. To improve, ensure your opinion is clearly stated in the introduction and consistently reinforced throughout the body paragraphs, culminating in a definitive summary in the conclusion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organised with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use a range of cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'On the other hand', and 'In addition' to link your points effectively. However, the final paragraph is somewhat awkward and overly verbose, using phrases like 'The inexorable description on this subject matter' which feels forced and slightly disconnected from the rest of the essay's tone. Improving the natural flow of the conclusion would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with some precision, using terms like 'ubiquitous', 'irrefutable', and 'paramount'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'The inexorable description on this subject matter' is unnatural and does not fit the context. Additionally, there is a recurring grammatical error with the verb 'have became' (should be 'have become'). While you attempt to use less common vocabulary, ensure that these words are used in appropriate contexts to avoid sounding artificial.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While many sentences are clear, there are several grammatical errors that persist. For instance, 'theatres and cinemas plays' (subject-verb agreement error) and 'have became' (incorrect verb form). There is also a punctuation error in 'It is an irrefutable fact that, there are...' where the comma is unnecessary. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and verb tense consistency to improve your accuracy.
