IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that in the digital age, theatres and cinemas are no longer important as people can watch all the entertainment they want online. Others argue that theatres and cinemas are still important both economically and culturally.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Many people think that the digital age is more important than everything because we can do almost everything on our phones or digital devices. Consequently, people do not care about other activities. They can access any film they want to watch. I disagree with this opinion.
Technology is one of the most important discoveries of our century. However, we are all human, and we need to spend time together. The best way to be together is to go somewhere, especially to the cinema or theatre. When you go to these places, you can discuss the film or play with your friends. You can eat something and share your emotions about the film. This is beneficial for your mental health.
In addition, these activities are forms of art, and if you experience them in real life, they can feed your soul. You can learn about another culture or become aware of something about your own life, and this is one of the greatest benefits.
However, others argue that home is more comfortable than going out, so we should stay at home and watch something on YouTube or the Internet. You will not get tired, and home is also quieter than a movie theatre. You can spend time by yourself and have a rest at home. Also, you can save money. Nevertheless, I believe that staying at home all the time is not beneficial.
As a result, people are social beings. They should go out, spend time with others and experience these activities in real life.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat superficial. While you mention that theatres are 'beneficial for mental health' and 'feed your soul,' these points are not supported with specific examples or detailed explanations. The economic aspect mentioned in the prompt is entirely ignored, which is a significant omission. To reach a higher band, you need to expand on your points with concrete evidence or logical reasoning rather than relying on general statements. The conclusion is also quite brief and does not fully synthesize the arguments presented.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Consequently,' 'In addition,' and 'Nevertheless' to link ideas. However, the progression of ideas within paragraphs is sometimes repetitive, particularly in the second and third paragraphs. The transition between the discussion of the digital age and the benefits of social interaction could be smoother. Additionally, the use of referencing is occasionally mechanical. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each sentence flows naturally from the previous one would enhance the overall coherence of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is generally appropriate for the task, but it lacks the range and precision required for a higher band. You rely on common, simple words like 'important,' 'good,' and 'things.' There is an attempt to use some topic-specific vocabulary such as 'digital age' and 'social beings,' but the overall lexical range is limited. To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations and less common synonyms to express your ideas with greater nuance. For example, instead of repeating 'important,' use words like 'significant,' 'pivotal,' or 'essential' depending on the context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most of your sentences are grammatically correct, and errors are infrequent and do not impede communication. However, the range of structures is somewhat limited; you rely heavily on simple subject-verb-object patterns. To achieve a higher score, you should aim to incorporate a wider variety of complex structures, such as conditional sentences, passive voice, or relative clauses, to demonstrate greater control over your writing. Punctuation is generally accurate, but ensure that your sentence variety is increased to show a more sophisticated command of English grammar.
