Student answer (Band 5.0)

Some people say that in the digital age, theatres and cinemas are no longer important as people can watch all the entertainment they want online. Others argue that theaters and cinemas are still important both economically and culturally. In this essay , i will discuss both the views and also give my opinion.

On one hand , few individuals illustrate that in digital age , theaters and cinemas are no longer important as people can watch all the entertainment they want online. Firstly , if there are no theaters than nobody go outside to see movies in cinemas and theaters and this is saving of money . Secondly , this is the wastage of timing in go to cinemas . For example , if people go to cinemas and theaters than they pay money to taxy driver and this is wastage of money and also if anyone use their own vehicle to go outside than it cause of pollution .

On the other hand, some people said that theatres and cinemas are still important both economically and culturally. I also favour this opinion because some people go to cinema to saw movie with their family or friends . This is one of the best way to spend time with own family and also with friends.

To conclude, although people have their own opinion about the distinct argument . I , however , think their should be a balanced opinion and each one of us should give priority to the people can watch all the entertainment they want online as well as cinemas and theaters are important both economically and culturally.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a personal opinion, meeting the basic requirements of the prompt. However, the development of ideas is limited and somewhat repetitive. For instance, the argument regarding the 'wastage of money' on taxis and pollution is not well-connected to the core topic of the cultural or economic importance of cinemas. The ideas are under-developed, and the conclusion does not clearly synthesize the arguments, instead offering a vague suggestion that both views should be prioritized. To improve, you should provide more specific, logical examples that directly support the economic and cultural arguments mentioned in the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical and sometimes inaccurate. Phrases like 'On one hand' and 'On the other hand' are used, but the internal flow of sentences is disjointed. For example, the transition between the idea of 'saving money' and 'wastage of timing' is abrupt. Additionally, the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the final paragraph where the conclusion lacks a logical link to the preceding arguments. Improving the variety and precision of linking words would enhance the flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is limited and repetitive, often relying on basic phrasing. There are several instances of awkward word choice, such as 'few individuals illustrate' (instead of 'argue' or 'claim') and 'wastage of timing' (instead of 'waste of time'). The range of vocabulary is insufficient to express complex ideas with precision. To reach a higher band, you should focus on using more academic collocations and synonyms to avoid repeating the same words throughout the text. For example, instead of repeating 'theaters and cinemas' multiple times, use terms like 'traditional viewing venues' or 'the big screen experience'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. There are consistent issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'some people said' instead of 'say', 'there should be' misspelled as 'their should be'), article usage, and sentence structure. Many sentences are simple or contain errors in complex structures, such as 'if there are no theaters than nobody go outside'. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with unnecessary spaces before commas. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction and proofreading for common errors like verb tense consistency and singular/plural agreement.
