Student answer (Band 5.5)

A small number of people have a perspective that is there no enough need of theatres and cinemas in the coming time as everything is occupied by advanced technology. On the opposition, some people argue that the importance of cinemas and other movie houses can never be denied because they have fundamental affect on economic status of country. In this essay, we will discuss both these perspectives.

Some people say that cinemas are not necessary because of several reasons. The most important is that smart phones, laptops and computers are alternatives of movie houses and cinemas because you can easily watch any movie, drama or series of your own interest. The other benefit of these digital technologies is that they save our money which we spend on theatre tickets. The third most important reason is that in this digital age, it saves our time which is wasted in travelling towards film places.

On the other hand, there are some essential effects of cinemas, theatres and movie house on economic conditions of country. People who want to enjoy public holidays or vacations are impatiently attracted towards this suspicious, comfortable and relaxing location. Tourists spend massive amount of budget on these kind of enjoyments which have a positive effect on financial situation of country. Some times people like to attend outside gatherings. For example, I usually prefer my laptop to watch movies in my leisure time but when I am with my cousins, I like to go outside on a public place such as, restaurants, coffee bars and cinemas, where we fully enjoy our time.

In my opinion, people should recommend their digital devices especially laptops and computers screens to watch old movies and do not waste money on theatres and movie houses. They should only prefer cinemas in such case, if any new informative movie or drama is released which is not currently available on social media platforms.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat superficial. For instance, the economic argument is supported by vague claims about tourists and 'suspicious' locations, which does not effectively demonstrate the cultural or economic importance of cinemas. The opinion provided in the conclusion is slightly contradictory to the prompt's focus on the 'importance' of theatres, as it focuses more on personal preference for digital devices. To reach a higher band, you should provide more specific, well-reasoned examples that directly address the economic and cultural impact mentioned in the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, and there is a logical progression of ideas. You use some cohesive devices such as 'On the other hand' and 'For example' to link your points. However, the use of linking words is sometimes mechanical or slightly unnatural, such as 'On the opposition' instead of 'In contrast' or 'On the other hand'. Additionally, some transitions between sentences within paragraphs feel a bit abrupt. Improving the variety and precision of your cohesive devices would help the flow of the essay feel more natural and sophisticated.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks precision and sophistication. There are several instances of awkward word choices, such as 'fundamental affect' (should be 'effect'), 'suspicious' (which is used incorrectly to describe a relaxing location), and 'film places'. While you attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary, the misuse of words occasionally hinders clarity. To improve, focus on learning collocations and ensuring that the words you choose accurately reflect the intended meaning in an academic context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, including issues with articles ('on economic conditions of country'), subject-verb agreement, and word order. For example, 'A small number of people have a perspective that is there no enough need' is grammatically clunky. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your argument, they are frequent enough to limit the score. Focusing on sentence construction and proofreading for basic errors would significantly improve your performance.
