Student answer (Band 5.5)

Nowadays, due to the digital age, people increasingly prefer to watch movies and other web series on OTT platforms. Many people think that theatres and cinemas are no longer preferable because individuals can access a wide range of entertainment online. On the other hand, most people argue that they are still important because they contribute to economic development and cultural exchange. I agree with the latest view.

In the present day, movies and different web series are available on streaming platforms such as YouTube and Netflix. These platforms are particularly popular among youngsters because they are relatively low-cost and save time. For example, an individual can purchase a monthly Netflix subscription for around 499 rupees, which is similar to the price of a single cinema ticket. Moreover, this subscription also provides access to a wide range of other programmes. During COVID-19, when theaters and cinemas were closed, individuals watched movies online.

On the other hand, cinemas are relatively expensive, but they provide a unique atmosphere and experience that online cannot replace at home. Furthermore, there is a large group of people who enjoy movie theatres. According to them, cinemas and theatres provide an exciting atmosphere and provide a place for entertainment.

In addition, cinemas play an important role in cultural exchange. For example, several Korean and Japanese films and television shows have become popular amoung young people. Through these contents viewers can learn about different traditions and languages, which promote cultural understanding.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the conclusion is incomplete, cutting off mid-sentence, which prevents a full summary of the argument. While the ideas are relevant, the development of the 'economic' aspect mentioned in the prompt is somewhat thin, focusing more on the consumer experience than the broader economic impact on the industry. To reach a higher band, ensure that all parts of the prompt are fully explored and that the essay is brought to a complete, coherent conclusion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'On the other hand', and 'In addition' are used to link sentences and paragraphs. However, the abrupt ending significantly impacts the overall coherence of the final paragraph. Referencing is generally clear, but the flow is interrupted by the unfinished conclusion. Improving the transition between the economic and cultural arguments would further enhance the logical flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'cultural exchange' and 'subscription'. However, there are several spelling errors, such as 'amoung', 'convinient', 'atmossphere', and 'ant', which detract from the quality of the writing. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more careful proofreading to ensure accuracy in spelling and word choice.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is generally good control over basic grammar, and the meaning is usually clear. However, there are minor punctuation and grammatical slips, such as the comma usage in 'although, online platforms may be convinient and cost effective ,'. The incomplete final sentence makes it impossible to judge the grammatical accuracy of the conclusion. To improve, focus on maintaining consistent control over complex structures and ensuring punctuation is used correctly.
