Student answer (Band 5.5)

Some people believe that in this contemporary era, theatres and cinemas are not pivotal for public because they can easily access all entertaining material online through various social media platform while other people contend that theatres and cinemas are still imperative traditionally and economically for every nation. I strongly believe that these places are beneficial and this essay will discuss both views.

Cinemas and Theatres are the part of our culture from hundred of years. They are serving as a source of entertainment as well as a financial source for artists. Artists are entirely dependent on them for the showcase of their art and capabilities, even these places are the source of their livelihood. In this modern era, youngsters are opting theatre as their profession and selecting their educational subjects in media.

Furthermore, theatres and cinemas are making every country economy wealthy and prosperous, by generating double the revenue every year then previous. Various businesses are running effectively today due to cinemas. In Cinemas, different clothing and food brands constructed their outlets and they are making great profit. Snacks consider as compulsory while watching movie in cinemas. Cinemas become a source of marketing for other brands. Additionally, numerous countries in world are recognized due to their celebrities and media figures. Without any second thought, these artists and craftsmen are extremely talented, hardworking and punctual due to these qualities artists now-a-days gaining popularity tremendously.

Maybe in this digital age some people do not rely on cinemas and theatres due to waste of money on transportation, purchasing tickets and also due to crowd. But in my perspective, they are great source of entertainment. People can unwind themselves after their long hectic weekdays on weekends and spend their quality leisure time.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. While the economic benefits are discussed with specific examples like food and clothing brands, the cultural significance is mentioned only briefly. The counter-argument regarding digital alternatives is under-developed, as the essay focuses more on the benefits of physical venues than on the specific reasons why people might prefer online alternatives. To reach a higher band, ensure that the 'digital age' perspective is explored with the same depth as the 'traditional' perspective, providing more balanced support for both sides of the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear central theme. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Furthermore', 'Additionally', and 'In my perspective', which help guide the reader through the argument. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. For instance, the transition from the economic impact of cinemas to the popularity of celebrities is a bit abrupt. Paragraphing is used appropriately, but the internal structure of the paragraphs could benefit from more varied linking words to improve the overall flow and logical progression of ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, with some attempts at using more sophisticated terms like 'contemporary era', 'pivotal', and 'imperative'. However, there are instances of awkward phrasing and collocation errors, such as 'constructed their outlets' (should be 'established' or 'opened') and 'snacks consider as compulsory' (should be 'are considered'). The range is sufficient to convey meaning, but the lack of precision in word choice prevents it from reaching a higher band. Focusing on more natural collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing will help improve this score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the' theatre), pluralization ('hundred of years' instead of 'hundreds of years'), and subject-verb agreement ('Snacks consider as'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some run-on sentences and missing commas that affect readability. To improve, focus on mastering basic grammatical rules, such as plural forms and article usage, and ensure that complex sentences are constructed with greater accuracy to avoid impeding the reader's understanding.
