Student answer (Band 7.0)

There's a growing debate on the different sources people can access for enjoyment. Some believe that online platforms are a much better option of entertainment in this modern era, while others argue that theatres are still very important both economically and culturally. This essay will discuss both views before giving my opining.

Proponents of the first view believe that the availability of websites like Amazon Prime and Netflix has made entertainment easily accessible and convenient. Individuals can enjoy their favourite movies and dramas from the comfort of their homes. Additionally, it has reduced the hassle of booking show tickets and the need to travel to a cinema. An individual can choose from a wide variety of options available based on their preference and can watch whenever they have the time to, without having to alter their schedule based on the show timings.

Conversely, those who advocate on the importance of theatres and cinemas believe that they are part of a country's tradition and culture. It provides an experience where people come together to watch folk shows and roleplays, celebrating traditional music, art and heritage. Moreover, they generate high revenues from the box office returns initially which later transition to generating profits for cinema owners in the later weeks of screening. Beverage and snack stands also add to this, along with creating job opportunities for a number of people.

In conclusion, after considering both perspectives I personally believe that although the digital age has created much ease for people, along with providing greater viewing options. However, theatres and cinemas still play a vital role by keeping traditions alive and generously contributing to the economy.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed all parts of the prompt by discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant and logically developed. However, the conclusion is slightly underdeveloped; while you state your opinion, it would be stronger if you briefly summarised the main reasons for your stance rather than just restating the prompt's themes. The essay is well-structured, but the depth of analysis could be improved by providing more specific examples, such as mentioning how local cinemas contribute to community identity or specific economic impacts beyond general statements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organised with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and you use cohesive devices such as 'Additionally', 'Conversely', and 'Moreover' effectively to link your points. However, the final sentence of the conclusion is a sentence fragment ('However, theatres and cinemas still play a vital role...'), which disrupts the flow. Improving the transition between the two main body paragraphs and ensuring all sentences are grammatically complete would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with some precision. Phrases like 'proponents of the first view' and 'advocate on the importance' are appropriate. However, there are some minor collocation issues, such as 'advocate on the importance' (should be 'advocate for') and 'generated high revenues from the box office returns initially' which is slightly wordy. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more sophisticated, less common lexical items related to the film industry or economic impact.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, and your meaning is generally clear. There are some grammatical slips, such as the aforementioned sentence fragment in the conclusion and the incorrect preposition in 'advocate on'. Additionally, 'giving my opining' contains a clear typo ('opinion'). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the essay from reaching the higher bands where error-free complex structures are more consistent. Focus on proofreading for small slips and ensuring that all sentences contain a clear subject and verb.
