Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often argued that the theatres and the cinemas are not essential in this digital world. It is believed that all the entertainment content is now available 24\7 on the internet. While some people still believe that the such establishments play an essential role in our society. I believe that theatres and cinemas have a greater importance in our society because they provide us jobs and provide outing opportunities to people. Firstly, some people believe that there are no need of theatres and cinema halls in this online world. Nowadays, everything is available on the internet with flexible features. We can access them anytime when we are free instead of fixed schedule. For example, when we plan to watch a new movie on the internet. We can access the movie at any time that are suitable for us. We can watch the movie on the Netflix by purchasing Netflix subscription. Netflix monthly plan is budget friendly. We can enjoy the movie in the room and do not need to go to cinema halls and book the costly tickets. We can pause the movie or watch it at different speed. So, the Internet made this more accessible and affordable for everyone. On the other side, many people believe that such venues are of greater importance. These entertainment venues are not only a source of entertainment, they also provide jobs to numerous people including actors, sweepers and directors etc. They also promote our society's culture globally. They are also a source of entertainment for the families. For example, the families plan to watch a movie and go out for outing. In this way, they are able to spend some quality time with each other and get a break from daily hectic routine work. Hence, these venues support our society's culture and economy. In the conclusion, the access to all entertainment content is more easy and affordable in this digital world. However, I strongly believe that such entertainment venues are still essential for our society. They contribute to make our society economically and culturally stronger and significant on the foreign level.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the economic impact of jobs and the cultural value of shared experiences. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat basic. For instance, the argument regarding 'jobs' is listed rather than deeply explored, and the cultural argument could be more nuanced. While the position is consistent throughout, the supporting points rely on simple examples like Netflix or family outings, which limits the depth of the analysis. To reach a higher band, you should aim to expand on the implications of these points rather than just listing them.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two opposing views. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'On the other side', and 'In the conclusion' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel mechanical, and there are instances where sentence-level cohesion is slightly awkward, such as the sentence fragment 'While some people still believe that the such establishments play an essential role in our society.' Improving the flow between sentences and using a wider variety of linking words would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express ideas clearly. There is some attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'entertainment content', 'flexible features', and 'economically and culturally stronger'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are occasional errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'on the foreign level' (instead of 'internationally') and 'do not need to go to cinema halls' (which is slightly repetitive). To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations and avoid repeating basic terms like 'entertainment' and 'society' too frequently.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the theatres', 'the such establishments') and sentence fragments. For example, 'While some people still believe that the such establishments play an essential role in our society' is a dependent clause punctuated as a full sentence. Additionally, there are minor errors in subject-verb agreement and preposition usage, such as 'at any time that are suitable'. These errors do not impede communication, but they do prevent the essay from reaching a higher band score for accuracy.
