Student answer (Band 6.0)
It is often argued that theatres and cinemas are not essential in this digital world. It is believed that all the entertainment content is now available 24/7 on the internet. While some people still believe that such establishments play an essential role in our society. I believe that theatres and cinemas have a greater importance in our society because they provide employment and outing opportunities to people.
Firstly, some people believe that there is no need for theatres and cinema halls in this online world. Nowadays, everything is available on the internet with flexible features. We can access them anytime when we are free instead of a fixed schedule. For example, when we plan to watch a new movie on the internet. We can access the movie at any time that is convenient for us. We can watch the movie on Netflix by purchasing a Netflix subscription. A Netflix monthly plan is budget-friendly. We can enjoy a movie in the room and do not need to go to cinema halls and book the costly tickets. We can pause the movie or to watch it at a different speed. So, the Internet has made this more accessible and affordable for everyone.
On the other side, many people believe that such venues are of greater importance. These entertainment venues are not only a source of entertainment, they also provide employment to numerous people including actors, cleaners, directors and other workers. They also promote our society local culture globally. They are also a source of entertainment for the families. For example, when families plan to watch a movie. In this way, they are able to spend some quality time with each other and get a break from daily routine work. Hence, these venues support our society local culture and economy.
In the conclusion, accessibility to all entertainment content is easier and affordable in this online world. However, I strongly believe that such entertainment venues are still essential for our society. They contribute to make our society economically and culturally stronger.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the economic benefits of employment and the social value of shared experiences. However, the development is somewhat repetitive; for instance, the points about 'entertainment' and 'society' are mentioned multiple times without significant expansion. To reach a higher band, the arguments could be more deeply explored with more specific examples or nuanced analysis of the cultural impact beyond general statements. The position is consistent throughout the essay, meeting the requirements for a Band 6.5 or 7.0, but the lack of depth in supporting arguments keeps it at a 6.5.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two opposing views. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'On the other side', and 'In the conclusion' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical or repetitive. Additionally, there are minor issues with sentence-level cohesion, such as the sentence fragment 'While some people still believe that such establishments play an essential role in our society.' which should be connected to the previous sentence. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There is an attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'budget-friendly', 'establishments', and 'accessible'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a tendency to repeat words like 'entertainment', 'society', and 'important' frequently. The word choice is functional but lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band. There are no significant errors in spelling or word formation that impede communication, but the lexical range does not demonstrate the flexibility needed for a Band 7 or above.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While many sentences are clear, there are recurring grammatical errors, such as the sentence fragment in the introduction and the awkward phrasing 'contribute to make our society economically and culturally stronger' (should be 'contribute to making'). There are also minor punctuation issues and some repetitive sentence beginnings. While the errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the message, they are frequent enough to suggest a lack of full control over complex structures. Improving the variety of sentence types and ensuring grammatical accuracy in complex clauses would help raise this score.
