Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often argued that theatres and cinemas are not essential in this digital world. It is believed that all the entertainment content is now available 24/7 on the internet. While some people still believe that such establishments play an essential role in our society. I believe that theatres and cinemas have a greater importance in our society because they provide employment and outing opportunities to people.

Firstly, some people believe that there is no need for theatres and cinema halls in this online world. Nowadays, everything is available on the internet with flexible features. We can access them anytime when we are free instead of a fixed schedule. For example, when we plan to watch a new movie on the internet. We can access the movie at any time that is convenient for us. We can watch the movie on Netflix by purchasing a Netflix subscription. A Netflix monthly plan is budget-friendly. We can enjoy a movie in the room and do not need to go to cinema halls and book the costly tickets. We can pause the movie or to watch it at a different speed. So, the Internet has made this more accessible and affordable for everyone.

On the other side, many people believe that such venues are of greater importance. These entertainment venues are not only a source of entertainment, they also provide employment to numerous people including actors, cleaners, directors and other workers. They also promote our society local culture globally. They are also a source of entertainment for the families. For example, when families plan to watch a movie. In this way, they are able to spend some quality time with each other and get a break from daily routine work. Hence, these venues support our society local culture and economy.

In the conclusion, accessibility to all entertainment content is easier and affordable in this online world. However, I strongly believe that such entertainment venues are still essential for our society. They contribute to make our society economically and culturally stronger.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The position is consistent throughout the essay. Ideas are relevant, such as the economic impact and the social benefits of cinemas. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat basic. For instance, the point about 'local culture' is mentioned but not fully explored with specific examples. To reach a higher band, you should aim to provide more depth in your supporting arguments, perhaps by discussing how specific cultural events or community gatherings in cinemas foster social cohesion beyond just 'spending quality time'.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two viewpoints. Cohesive devices are present, such as 'Firstly', 'On the other side', and 'In the conclusion'. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical or repetitive. Additionally, there are instances where sentence structure could be improved to enhance flow; for example, the sentence 'While some people still believe that such establishments play an essential role in our society' is a fragment and should be connected to the previous or following sentence to maintain logical progression.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express ideas clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'subscription', 'budget-friendly', and 'economically'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a reliance on simpler phrasing. There are also minor issues with word choice, such as 'outing opportunities', which is not the most natural collocation in this context. To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated synonyms and idiomatic collocations related to the entertainment industry and social impact to demonstrate a wider, more flexible range of vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors. For example, 'In the conclusion' should be 'In conclusion'. There are also punctuation issues, such as starting sentences with 'For example' followed by a fragment ('When we plan to watch a new movie on the internet. We can access...'). These errors occur frequently enough to be noticeable but do not prevent the reader from understanding the message. Increasing the variety of complex structures while ensuring subject-verb agreement and correct sentence boundaries will help improve this score.
