Student answer (Band 8.0)
It is often argued that traditional cinemas have lost their relevance in the digital age because people can watch all the entertainment they want online. While online streaming offers undeniable convenience, I firmly believe that theatres and cinemas remain critically important both culturally and economically.
On the one hand, the proliferation of digital streaming platforms has undoubtedly changed how audiences consume media. Viewers can now access thousands of movies and TV shows instantly from home, eliminating the need to travel or pay high ticket prices. From this perspective, some might view physical cinemas as outdated, as home-viewing setups continue to improve.
On the other hand, traditional cinemas offer an irreplaceable sensory and social experience that online platforms cannot replicate. Some people prefer watching movies in a cinema for the grand big-screen view, superior sound systems, and immersive atmosphere, which creates a completely different vibe compared to a smaller home screen. Furthermore, theatres serve as vital social hubs . for instance, many children love spending their weekends at the theatre with their parents to watch newly released animated movies as a shared family tradition. Additionally, major film studios still utilise exclusive theatrical releases, meaning certain high-profile movies are not immediately available on OTT platforms, driving audiences to visit physical venues.
Beyond these cultural benefits, theatres and cinemas are still crucially important economically. The film exhibition sector generates substantial revenue, creates millions of jobs globally for local venue staff and surrounding businesses like restaurants, and contributes significantly to boosting regional economies and government tax revenues.
In conclusion, although digital streaming has revolutionized modern entertainment, I reiterate that traditional cinemas remain culturally essential for immersive social experiences and economically vital for industry growth.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt. You clearly present both sides of the argument—the convenience of digital streaming versus the cultural and economic value of physical venues—and maintain a consistent, well-supported personal opinion throughout. The ideas are extended with relevant examples, such as the social aspect of family outings and the economic impact on local businesses. The position is clear from the introduction to the conclusion, and the arguments are balanced and logical. To reach a Band 9, you could further deepen the analysis by briefly discussing the potential future evolution of these venues to ensure they remain relevant, but the current development is excellent for a Band 8.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between the two viewpoints is smooth, utilizing effective cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand,' 'On the other hand,' and 'Beyond these cultural benefits.' The paragraphing is appropriate, and referencing is clear throughout. There is a minor punctuation error with a stray period in the third paragraph ('social hubs . for instance'), but this is a minor slip that does not impede the overall flow. The use of linking words is natural and contributes to the overall coherence of the piece.
Lexical Resource — Band 8.0
You demonstrate a wide and flexible range of vocabulary, which allows for precise expression. Phrases such as 'proliferation of digital streaming platforms,' 'irreplaceable sensory and social experience,' and 'film exhibition sector' show a high level of lexical control. You use less common items effectively and maintain a formal, academic tone throughout. There are no significant errors in word choice or collocation. The vocabulary is well-suited to the topic and enhances the clarity and impact of your arguments. It is a strong performance that reflects a sophisticated command of the English language.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0
The essay displays a wide range of complex structures, including conditional-like reasoning and varied sentence lengths. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over grammar and punctuation is generally excellent. You successfully use complex clauses to link ideas, such as 'meaning certain high-profile movies are not immediately available on OTT platforms, driving audiences to visit physical venues.' While there is a minor punctuation error in the third paragraph, it is an isolated incident and does not detract from the overall high level of grammatical accuracy. Your writing is fluent and demonstrates a high degree of flexibility.
