Student answer (Band 5.5)

In today's rapidly evolving, modern world, technology plays a vital role in all aspects of our living. It has influenced us in many ways. It has reshaped the way we work, communicate and entertain ourselves. A substantial amount of individuals believe that in this digital age, theatres and cinemas are no longer important as people can watch all the entertainment online. However some argue that theatres and cinemas are still important both economically and culturally.

If we dive deeper into this topic we realize that theatres and cinemas are a source of good entertainment. A ticket is required to book and watch different plays which may or may not be according to a persons taste. A person usually has to drive all the way to watch it and on specific, given date and time. A lot of crowd is present to watch the same show or movie. Sometimes the shows are longer and the viewer gets tired and has no option to lay and has to bear till it ends.

Comparatively, if we consider watching a series or movie on our personal digital device, we see that we can simply watch it whenever, where ever we want to. We can simply lay down in bed after a tiring day and also adjust the time and topic according to our preference.

we can simply pause it we believe that its too overwhelming and resume it to continue watching. It is highly cost efficient also as kit require no tickets, even some websites provide free streaming.

So, I am of the opinion that digital appliances has revolutionized every aspect of our life and cinemas and theatres are outdated methods, which are no longer important.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses both views and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development is somewhat unbalanced. While the digital side is explored with specific examples, the argument for the importance of theatres and cinemas (economically and culturally) is largely ignored, which is a key requirement of the prompt. The essay focuses heavily on the convenience of streaming rather than discussing the broader societal value of physical venues. To reach a higher band, you must ensure that both sides of the argument are given equal weight and depth of analysis.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into paragraphs, but the logical progression is weak. The transition between the introduction and the body paragraphs is abrupt. While some cohesive devices are used (e.g., 'However', 'Comparatively'), they are sometimes used mechanically. The referencing is occasionally unclear, and the lack of a concluding summary makes the overall structure feel incomplete. Improving the use of linking words to connect ideas within and between paragraphs would significantly enhance the flow of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. You rely on common phrases like 'good entertainment' and 'tiring day'. There are some inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'a substantial amount of individuals' (should be 'number of') and 'digital appliances' (which usually refers to hardware like fridges or washing machines, rather than streaming platforms). Expanding your vocabulary to include more topic-specific collocations would improve your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity, such as 'A lot of crowd is present' (should be 'Large crowds are present') and 'it require no tickets' (subject-verb agreement error). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing commas and capitalization errors (e.g., 'we can simply pause it we believe'). While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors prevents the essay from reaching a higher band.
