Student answer (Band 5.5)

Certain individuals say that theatre and cinema are no longer essential in modern times because individuals can watch all the entertainment digitally through mobile phone or laptop. Other believe that theatre and cinema benefits the government economically and citizens culturally. This essay will discuss both these views and give my opinion that why i believe theatres and cinemas are still essential these days.

On the one hand, a few individuals say that theatres and cinemas are not prominent these days because we can watch entertainments such as movies, events, comedy shows online through our electronic devices. It can give numerous advantages to citizens by saving their expenses, time and other purposes. For instance, if a new movie have been released i will prefer to watch on an i pad instead of visiting theatre or cinema.

On the other hand, other individuals argue that theatre and cinemas are essential nowadays because it benefit economically and culturally. Governments earns a huge profit from the entertainment industry by charging CGST and SGST on consumers, which will make them economically strong. Furthermore, most of the individuals are addicted to watch new released shows and movies in theatres or cinemas, whenever they want to feel relaxed and want to refresh their minds after working long hours in the company they mostly prefer this kind of entertainments.

In conclusion, Others argue that theatres and cinemas are still essential both economically and culturally. I strongly believe this statement because it creates a major positive impact on government and individuals as well.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, including both views and a personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While the economic argument regarding taxes is relevant, the cultural aspect is mentioned but not sufficiently explored or supported with specific examples. The personal opinion is stated clearly in the introduction and conclusion, but the supporting arguments lack depth. To reach a higher band, you should expand on your points with more detailed explanations or specific real-world examples rather than relying on general statements about 'refreshing minds' or 'saving expenses'.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion' to signal the structure. However, the internal cohesion within paragraphs is sometimes mechanical. For instance, the transition between the economic benefit and the cultural benefit in the second body paragraph is abrupt. Additionally, the referencing is occasionally repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'theatres and cinemas'. Improving the variety of linking words and using pronouns or synonyms to refer back to previously mentioned concepts would enhance the flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. You use some relevant terms like 'entertainment industry' and 'economically', but there is a reliance on simple phrasing. There are also some inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'addicted to watch' (should be 'addicted to watching') and 'most of the individuals' (which is slightly unnatural). To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations and topic-specific vocabulary related to the arts, digital media, and economic impact, while ensuring they are used in the correct grammatical context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('if a new movie have been released', 'theatre and cinema benefits', 'Governments earns') and article usage errors ('visiting theatre or cinema'). While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are persistent throughout the text. To improve, focus on mastering basic subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles, and try to vary your sentence structures by using more complex clauses with greater accuracy.
