Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses both views and provides a clear personal opinion, meeting the requirements of the prompt. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument regarding the economic importance of theatres is mentioned but not fully explored or supported with specific examples. The points made about social connection are relevant but could be extended to reach a higher band. The position is consistent throughout, but the essay would benefit from more depth in the analysis of the economic and cultural aspects mentioned in the prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. Cohesive devices such as 'On the other hand', 'Furthermore', and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical, and there are instances where the flow between sentences could be smoother. Referencing is generally clear, but the transition between the introduction and the body paragraphs could be more sophisticated. Overall, the structure is coherent, and the progression of ideas is logical.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the student to express their ideas clearly. There are some attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'multiplex', 'convenient', and 'social connection'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'people are more reliable on digital devices' (should be 'reliant') and 'effects negatively on people's life' (should be 'affects'). The range of vocabulary is sufficient but lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement ('cinemas and theatres plays vital role') and article usage. Punctuation errors, such as unnecessary spaces before commas, are also present. While the student attempts complex sentences, these often contain errors that slightly impede the flow. To improve, the student should focus on subject-verb agreement and ensuring consistent control over basic grammatical structures.
