Student answer (Band 6.5)

In today's technology-driven world, streaming platforms have transformed the way people consume entertainment.some people argue that theatres and cinemas are of no longer relevant in the digital era. While others believe that they still play an important role both economically and culturally. This essay will discuss both views before explaining why I believe that theatres and cinemas remain valuable because they provide unique social experiences and make significant contributions to the economy and cultural life.

On the one hand, there are several reasons why some people believe that theatres and cinemas have become less important in today's modern technological era. The primary reason is the convenience offered by online streaming platforms . People can access a vast range of films, tv programmes and other forms of entertainment from the comfort of their homes, without having to travel to cinema or theatre. Furthermore, online entertainment can be more affordable, particularly for people who regularly watch films.A monthly streaming subscription can provide access to hundreds even thousands of programs and have made binge-watching common. For instance, platforms such as Netflix allows viewers to watch a wide variety of films and series at any time, making home entertainment both convenient and cost-effective.

On the other hand, cinemas and theatres offer an immersive experience that cannot be fully replicated by watching a film on a small screen at home. Going to the cinema is also a shared social experience that enables people to spend quality time with friends and family. Cinemas and theatres not only just provide entertainment but also boost the local economy. They contributes to the revenue generation and also supports local businesses. Theatres are particularly important because they serve as cultural institutions that preserve artistic traditions. For example, theatres can stage cultural performances and preserve cultural heritage while providing employment.

To conclude, while online entertainment offers unparalleled convenience, I strongly believe that cinemas and theatres contributes greatly to economic and cultural heritage. The decline of traditional cinemas could therefore have both cultural and economic consequences.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt. You clearly discuss both views regarding the relevance of cinemas and theatres in the digital age and provide a consistent personal opinion throughout the essay. The ideas are relevant and generally well-developed, particularly the distinction between the convenience of streaming and the immersive, social nature of traditional venues. To reach a higher band, ensure that your arguments are slightly more nuanced; for example, you could briefly acknowledge the economic challenges cinemas face to provide a more balanced discussion before reinforcing your position.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand,' 'Furthermore,' and 'To conclude' effectively to guide the reader. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two opposing views. However, some transitions could be more sophisticated to improve the flow between sentences. For instance, the link between the economic contribution of theatres and their role as cultural institutions could be strengthened with more precise cohesive markers to avoid a slightly list-like feel in the third paragraph.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with some precision, using terms like 'technology-driven world,' 'immersive experience,' and 'cultural institutions.' There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'contributes to the revenue generation' (should be 'contributes to revenue generation') and 'not only just provide' (redundant). While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, incorporating more sophisticated collocations or idiomatic expressions would elevate the response to a higher band level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, and your meaning is consistently clear. However, there are several grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('platforms allows,' 'cinemas and theatres contributes') and punctuation errors, including missing spaces after periods and commas. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on proofreading for subject-verb agreement and consistent punctuation will significantly improve your accuracy.
