Student answer (Band 6.0)

Cinemas and theatres have been a significant part of our culture for decades but now as the world is tremendously progressing with lots of technological advancements people now prefer to spend time online. Many people believe that they can watch all sort of entertainment free of cost while sitting in a cozy room. However, many people argue that theaters and cinemas are still important economically and culturally. This essay will discuss both points of view before giving my own opinion.

For a longer period of time, families and friends used to go together to watch movies in cinemas and stage performances in theaters. This improved the sense of belonging between them. In many cultures there's a tradition of going to cinemas along with families and friends to enjoy free time. For instance, in Pakistan people go to cinemas together during Eid holidays with their cousins and friends and watch newly released movies and spend some quality time together but now this tradition is fading day by day as now people sit in their homes, watch Netflix all day long, without feeling the need to get out of their homes and go to cinemas or theaters. Cinemas are a great place for introverts to enjoy their free time without getting disturbed.

In modernized world, people think of cinemas and theatres as an old fashion. One of the major disadvantage of watching stuff online is the addiction of screens among youth, young people get exposed to a lot of inappropriate content online which negatively impacts their attitudes and behaviors. In cinemas there is family along so there's no possibility of watching inappropriate content. Moreover, the percentage of mobile phone addiction has been raised to alarming levels in children and teenagers.

Cinemas and theatres are also important for our economy as they contribute a lot in economic development of our country, there is a fixed ticket price for each movie and that money goes for the welfare of the country. As it is a tradition in some cultures to go with families and friends this shows that cinemas and theatres carries cultural importance as well.

In my opinion, going to cinema is a good ritual especially when after a tiring day you want to feel relaxed by watching something good but on the other hand some days you don't find strength to get up and go out so in that scenario it's better to watch something online to boost up your mood. Both are dependent on individuals preference so encouraging going to cinemas or theaters is better than forcing anyone to go with you.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both the decline of cinemas due to online entertainment and their ongoing economic and cultural importance. You clearly state your opinion in the final paragraph. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. For example, the argument regarding the economy is quite brief and lacks specific evidence, while the section on 'inappropriate content' is a bit tangential to the core debate about the importance of cinemas. To reach a higher band, ensure that each supporting point is fully explored with more depth and direct relevance to the prompt's focus on economic and cultural value.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, each with a clear central theme. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'However,' 'For instance,' and 'Moreover,' to link ideas. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally mechanical, and some transitions feel abrupt. For instance, the jump from discussing family traditions to the benefits for introverts is a bit sudden. Additionally, the use of referencing could be more precise to improve the overall flow. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between paragraphs would help elevate the coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'technological advancements,' 'economic development,' and 'ritual.' However, there are instances of imprecise word choice and collocation errors, such as 'watching stuff online' (too informal), 'old fashion' (should be 'old-fashioned'), and 'the percentage of mobile phone addiction has been raised' (should be 'risen'). To improve, focus on using more academic collocations and avoiding informal phrasing. Expanding your vocabulary to include more precise, topic-specific terminology would help you achieve a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is a good start. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally affect clarity, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('cinemas and theatres carries') and punctuation errors, particularly with comma splices. Some sentences are also slightly awkward, such as 'In modernized world, people think of cinemas and theatres as an old fashion.' While these errors rarely impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher band. Focus on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and ensuring correct article usage.
