Some people say that in the digital age, theatres and cinemas are no longer important as people can watch all the entertainment they want online. Others argue that theatres and cinemas are still important both economically and culturally.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Some individuals are of the view that theatres and cinemas are of no value in this technological era whiles others are of the opinion that going to cinemas to watch movies is still vital both economically and culturally. I strongly support the idea that, theatres should still be operated to showcase more of cultural performances and to also help make our creative and tourism industry more attractive for both locals and international tourists.

Firstly,an active theater helps stage actors and actresses display a country's culture and tradition that isn't popular to its citizens, this platform also helps groom confident, outspoken and well mannered actors since they are mostly in the midst of older crew members, hence more information is preserved and passed down to the younger generation.

In addition, the creative and tourism department becomes a lucrative sector since revenue generated are used to improve upon the infrastructure, human resource and equipments needed for proper training, employment level rises as well. Also arts and local crafts items are sold to visitors which provides income for the sellers and indirectly increases a country's gross domestic product from the taxes that will be paid. Moreover a booming and competitive creative industry can attract investors who will help put out their work on the globe.

However, whiles innovation have made everything simple and convenient, many individuals will like to save themselves the stress of having to be stuck in traffic for a film premiere and spending much money on movie tickets by streaming live on digital platforms such as Netflix and YouTube alongside having a good conversation with their relatives at home.

In conclusion, considering the advancement of technology few people will like to avoid spending much on theatre tickets and transport, but I am of the opinion that cinemas should still be opened to the public to help pass down a country's tradition to its younger ones and also help boost a nations economy from the sales of arts and local crafts to visitors.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal position in the introduction and conclusion. The ideas regarding cultural preservation and economic benefits are relevant and well-supported. However, the discussion of the opposing view (digital streaming) is somewhat brief compared to the arguments for theatres. To reach a higher band, ensure that the counter-argument is developed with equal depth to the main argument. The position is consistent throughout, and the main points are extended with examples, such as the mention of tourism and local crafts, which adds depth to the response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between paragraphs is generally smooth. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'In addition', 'Moreover', and 'However' are used effectively to guide the reader. However, some referencing is slightly mechanical, and the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking phrases. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different viewpoints, which helps the reader follow the structure of the argument easily.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally appropriate and sufficient for the task. You have used some topic-specific terms like 'creative and tourism industry', 'lucrative sector', and 'gross domestic product'. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'showcase more of cultural performances' (should be 'showcase more cultural performances') and 'equipments' (equipment is an uncountable noun). While the range is adequate, incorporating more sophisticated collocations or idiomatic expressions would elevate the score further. The spelling is accurate throughout the text.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('revenue generated are used' should be 'is used') and punctuation errors (missing spaces after commas, e.g., 'confident, outspoken'). The use of 'whiles' as a conjunction is non-standard; 'while' is the correct form. Despite these errors, the meaning is always clear, and the errors do not impede communication. To improve, focus on proofreading for minor slips in agreement and punctuation, and attempt more varied complex sentence patterns.
