Student answer (Band 5.5)

In today's technological era few people ponder that theaters and cinemas are not important as all entertainment is available online. Whereas, some argue that they are important in both economical and cultural view. I agree to this statement and this essay will provide relevant examples for the same.

Entertainment is a very important field where every person from every age group gives there all just to make someone happy and it is a very noble cause. Movies that are a major part of entertainment should be always watched in the way that the director or creator intended the audence too watch. Moreover, in doing that it also opens up a wide spectrum of benifits going from social relations to just enjoying the movement. By just going to theatres and cinemas we create a very positive effect on our mind and it gives us a boost in our productivity and creativity.

But the same cannot be said for everyone as watching entertainment online could also be beneficiary to a lot of people that have some type of disability or even some that are just not comfortable being around people. Online entertainment is like a boon to this type of people cause they have not experienced the joy and the experience that the movies give in theaters. Moreover, in online platforms you can watch anything anytime and it all depends on you, that is also very beneficial to a lot of people.

In conclusion, theatres and cinemas are a very important role in watching entertainment but watching the same thing online is also a boon to a lot of people.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a personal opinion, meeting the basic requirements of the prompt. However, the development of ideas is limited. While you mention the cultural and economic importance of cinemas, you do not provide specific examples or detailed explanations to support these claims. The arguments regarding online entertainment are also somewhat superficial. To improve, you should expand on your points with concrete examples—such as the impact of local cinema closures on small businesses or the specific social benefits of shared viewing experiences—to ensure the response is fully developed rather than just stating general ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organised into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and occasionally repetitive. For instance, the transition between paragraphs could be smoother, and some linking phrases are used in a way that feels slightly forced. The introduction is a bit abrupt, and the conclusion does not effectively synthesise the arguments presented; it merely restates the existence of both sides without providing a final, cohesive summary of your position. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring each paragraph has a clear topic sentence would enhance the flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the range and precision required for a higher band. There are several instances of word-choice errors and spelling mistakes, such as 'audence' instead of 'audience', 'benifits' instead of 'benefits', and 'movement' instead of 'moment'. Furthermore, the phrasing is often simplistic. To achieve a higher score, you should aim to use more sophisticated vocabulary and collocations related to the topic, such as 'cinematic experience', 'accessibility', or 'economic viability', rather than relying on basic terms like 'good' or 'important'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the reader's flow. Examples include 'few people ponder that theaters... are not important' (awkward phrasing), 'gives there all' (incorrect homophone 'their'), and 'boon to this type of people' (should be 'these types of people'). While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors—particularly with subject-verb agreement and word forms—prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. Focusing on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy and diversifying sentence structure would be beneficial.
