Student answer (Band 6.0)

In the digital age people can watch movies, YouTube videos and other platforms at home. Because of this, many people believe that cinemas and theaters are no longer important. While others argue that theaters and cinemas are still important both economically and culturally. While opinions remain divided, I firmly contend that online entertainment is convenient, but cinemas still play vital role. Those who support online entertainment argue that it is cheaper and convenient. People can watch movie at any time at any place without leaving home and spending money. Streaming platforms like cinemas offer thousands of movies and TV series for one monthly fee. For busy people this saves both money and time. For example, during covid-19 pandemic many people got used to watching movies at home, so they no longer feel go to cinema. On the other hand, those who support cinema argue that it is important for economically and culturally. Economically it is important because they create many jobs for actors; staffs and many other people work in ticket sales and food. This is best illustrated by culturally watching movies at cinema is a different experience. Furthermore, cinemas attract customers at shopping mall which help other business. Additionally, at cinema big screen, surround sound and watching with other people makes it special. Moreover, it is a social activity where families and friends spend time together. For example, in Pakistan people still go to cinema to watch Eid movie as a tradition. In conclusion, although online platforms are popular because of convenience, I believe that cinemas and theaters remain important. They provide jobs, support the economy and offer a unique social and cultural experience that cannot be replaced by watching at home.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both sides of the argument and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the economic impact of job creation and the cultural value of the shared cinema experience. However, some points are slightly under-developed; for instance, the claim that cinemas help other businesses in shopping malls is mentioned but not fully explained. The position is consistent throughout the essay. To reach a higher band, ensure that each supporting point is elaborated with more depth rather than just listing benefits.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'On the other hand', 'Furthermore', and 'In conclusion', which help the flow of ideas. However, there are instances where the transition between sentences feels slightly mechanical or repetitive. Additionally, some referencing is a bit unclear, such as the sentence 'This is best illustrated by culturally watching movies at cinema is a different experience,' which lacks a clear link to the previous point. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different perspectives.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express ideas clearly. There are attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'streaming platforms', 'economically', and 'culturally'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'staffs' (which is uncountable) and 'feel go to cinema' (which is grammatically incorrect). The vocabulary is generally functional but lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands. Expanding the use of collocations and more academic phrasing would improve the score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('at cinema', 'at shopping mall'), verb forms ('no longer feel go to'), and pluralization ('staffs'). These errors are noticeable but do not significantly impede communication. To improve, the student should focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles, as well as refining complex sentence structures to ensure they are error-free.
