Student answer (Band 6.5)

Today, availability of the multiple social media platforms has completely changed viewers' preferences. Some argue that in the digital era, people can watch a variety of entertaining content online, which reduces importance of the theatres and cinemas, whereas others think that conventional sources still have a fundamental role to play in the entertainment industry. This essay will discuss both the trends before explaining why I believe that theatres and cinemas are unbeatable.

On the one hand, several digital platforms offer affordable yearly subscription schemes and worldwide content to audiences. People can watch whatever they want after a tiring and monotonous routine without escaping their homes. For instance, Netflix is the one of the most famous global entertaining apps, which provides multiple offers along with a greater freedom of choice regarding series, movies and short films. Eventually, viewers can get exceptional, creative and preferable content in a cheaper price. They can enjoy their leisure time at their cozy and comfortable place without engaging themselves to a seat in theatres.

On the other hand, cinemas are the cultural prestige of the country. A large number of people are associated with theatres to earn their income. Furthermore, for production house it is economically crucial to release their films in cinemas. For example, film industries such as Bollywood, Tollywood and Hollywood spend a large sum to produce a high-budget movie. They create contents to attract all kinds of the population with different opinions. For them theatres are the best option to achieve financial benefits. Producing a movie is not always associated with personal and commercial benefits; it represents a rich culture and tradition of the nation. After all, traditional style is irreplaceable, because audiences can feel the music, sound and screening effects.

To conclude, although there are multiple facilities in online apps, cinemas and theatres have been conveying emotions among people.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all parts of the prompt by discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. Your position is consistent throughout the essay. The ideas are relevant, particularly the economic arguments regarding film production and the cultural significance of cinemas. However, some points could be further extended; for instance, the economic argument could be strengthened by mentioning the impact on local businesses surrounding cinemas. Overall, the response is well-structured and directly answers the prompt, meeting the requirements for a Band 7.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'Furthermore', and 'To conclude' effectively to guide the reader. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two opposing views. While the progression of ideas is generally smooth, some transitions between sentences could be more sophisticated to improve the flow. The referencing is clear, and the overall structure supports the development of your argument well.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with some precision, using terms like 'monotonous routine', 'cultural prestige', and 'irreplaceable'. There are some minor inaccuracies in collocation, such as 'engaging themselves to a seat' (should be 'confining themselves to a seat') and 'in a cheaper price' (should be 'at a cheaper price'). However, these errors do not impede communication. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more idiomatic expressions or less common collocations related to the entertainment industry.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'availability of the multiple social media' (the article 'the' is unnecessary) and 'Netflix is the one of the most famous' (should be 'one of the most'). Additionally, 'create contents' should be 'create content' as it is an uncountable noun in this context. Despite these errors, your meaning is always clear, and the punctuation is generally accurate. The variety of structures is sufficient for this level.
