Some people say that in the digital age, theatres and cinemas are no longer important as people can watch all the entertainment they want online. Others argue that theatres and cinemas are still important both economically and culturally.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
According to a few individuals, in recent times theatres have lost its significance due to the availability of newly established online platforms. However, some believe they are evergreen economically and culturally. I agree with the view that they play a vital role in building a society.
Some recently developed platforms are gaining popularity in public all over the globe from a decade. Since these applications are improving their quality and making sure people access shows or movies in a short period of time after their release with reasonable charges, growing interest of audience is observed. So, everyone prefer spending on these online entertainments rather than watching a single movie at equal cost. For example, some famous OTT brands have made its packages cheaper and are making sure they release latest blockbuster film in relatively less number of days.
On the other hand, people have not completely stopped spending their money on theatres. They always look forward to watch a movie on a huge screen with friends, family or well-wishers. This can be a stage to develop a sense of togetherness with others irrespective to their age, gender, social group or status. It is profitable for the people working at the theatre, production and the actors as it helps them build their career. For instance, a recent cinema in Hollywood was a massive hit, as a result the production teams gain a lot of profits. Hence, this leads to economic growth.
In my opinion, no matter how famous the online platforms are becoming they can never replace the theatres and cinemas because they play an important role in source of income, development of a community and promote cultural practices.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the economic benefits of cinemas and the convenience of online platforms. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat superficial. For instance, the argument regarding economic growth is mentioned but not fully explored with specific, detailed evidence. The position is consistent throughout, but the essay would benefit from more depth in the supporting arguments to reach a higher band. Overall, it is a solid response that meets the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a central theme. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'However', 'On the other hand', and 'For instance', which help guide the reader through the argument. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are instances where the flow could be smoother. Referencing is generally clear, though some sentences are a bit repetitive in structure. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the progression of ideas from the digital shift to the enduring value of cinemas is logical and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express ideas clearly. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'evergreen' and 'togetherness', though some word choices are slightly imprecise or awkward, such as 'gaining popularity in public all over the globe from a decade'. There are also minor collocation issues, such as 'release latest blockbuster film'. While the range is sufficient to convey meaning, it lacks the precision and sophistication required for a higher band score. The vocabulary is generally functional rather than expressive.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('theatres have lost its significance', 'everyone prefer') and prepositional errors ('irrespective to'). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. The punctuation is generally correct, but the control over complex structures is inconsistent. To improve, the student should focus on subject-verb agreement and ensuring that pronouns correctly match their antecedents.
