IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that in the digital age, theatres and cinemas are no longer important as people can watch all the entertainment they want online. Others argue that theatres and cinemas are still important both economically and culturally.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It's argued that because of the internet, theatres and cinemas no longer hold the same significance as before since people can experience the entertainment online. While others say that they still hold a significant value in both economy and the culture. I personally agree with the second opinion which I'll prove in this essay by examining both opinions.

It's thought that the technology renders cinemas and theatres obsolete. However, despite the fact that movies and shows can be watched online through websites such as Netflix right from your home, they don't provide the same level of entertainment as you experience in the cinemas. Sitting and watching with a large number of people brings a whole another level of excitement and joy as opposed to watching alone or with a few friends or the family members. Internet connectivity is also an issue since internet connection isn't always stable everywhere and can spoil the experience.

The proponents of the second opinion however argue that it's clear in certain places how cinemas and theatres can generate a significant revenue that can contribute a considerable amount to the country's economy which helps the country overall. If these places are shut down, it'll severely impact the state's economy which might lead to the state taking loans to sustain its functions. The theatres are also vital for society's culture and demonstrate significant cultural values. People feel like being a part of the community, make new friends and share their precious moments together.

To conclude, in spite of technology's advancements, theatres and cinemas are still vital for the country's economy and society's culture since they provide better and smoother entertainment and contribute a large chunk to the economy.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the economic impact and the social experience of cinema. However, the development is somewhat limited. For example, the argument regarding the state taking loans if cinemas close is a bit speculative and lacks depth. To reach a higher band, you should provide more concrete examples or nuanced explanations for your points. The position is consistent throughout, and the conclusion effectively summarizes the main arguments presented in the body paragraphs.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'However,' 'The proponents of the second opinion,' and 'To conclude,' which help guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. For instance, the start of the second and third paragraphs could be more smoothly integrated. Referencing is generally clear, though the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to connect ideas more naturally rather than relying on standard transition markers.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'obsolete,' 'proponents,' and 'sustain its functions.' There are some minor inaccuracies in collocation and word choice, such as 'bring a whole another level' (should be 'a whole other level') and 'share their precious moments together' (which is slightly informal). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands. Expanding your use of topic-specific collocations related to economics and cultural sociology would enhance your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the conditional 'If these places are shut down, it'll severely impact...' and the concessive 'While others say that...'. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'It's argued that because of the internet, theatres and cinemas no longer hold the same significance as before since people can experience the entertainment online.' The phrase 'experience the entertainment' is slightly awkward. Punctuation is generally accurate, but there are occasional minor errors. The majority of your sentences are clear, and errors do not impede communication, which is characteristic of a solid band 6.5 or 7.0 performance.
