Student answer (Band 6.0)

There is ongoing debates about how the digital age has made theatres and cinemas become irrelevant in present time. In this essay i would discuss both views and give my opinion.

Modern technology such as mobile phones, smart tv has made movies and films more accessible. From the comfort of ones home, using this devices makes it very easy to choose countless movie options. Unlike the cinemas and theatres, these devices give an age to preference. For instance, digital gadgets provide search menu for users to choose movies based on their interest. Movie apps like Netflix, Prime, HBO provides option for choosing preference for movie categories like horror, action, animation and many more.

On the other hand, cinema and theatre centers are more beneficial to the society, both economically and culturally. These places are source of revenue generation for the government. Countries that still make use of these location is prone to be a tourist attraction for visitors, thereby encouraging the growth of the country GDP. In addition, these locations also encourage cultural awareness, theatres in particular. For instances, historical events that took place in the past can be recreated at the cinema. By so doing, locals and visitors become more aware about past events that contributed to the growth of ones country. First hand performance like these cant be gotten from digital device. Although one can say, these information can be gotten online through proper research on the internet regarding historic events in ones country

Inconclusion, i think digital age is more relevant than theatres or cinemas because technology has made it easy to get information and watch movies based on preference.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The essay addresses both views and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. The arguments regarding digital convenience are well-supported with examples like Netflix and Prime. Conversely, the economic and cultural arguments for cinemas are less developed and rely on generalisations. The conclusion is brief and does not fully synthesise the arguments presented in the body paragraphs. To reach a higher band, ensure that the counter-arguments are balanced with more depth and that the personal opinion is integrated more naturally throughout the essay rather than just stated at the end.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'On the other hand', 'In addition', and 'For instance', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions feel mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally imprecise, such as in the sentence 'First hand performance like these cant be gotten from digital device'. The use of paragraphing is appropriate, but the flow between the final body paragraph and the conclusion could be smoother. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring consistent referencing would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'irrelevant' and 'revenue generation'. However, there are instances of imprecise word choice and collocation errors, such as 'give an age to preference' and 'First hand performance'. Additionally, there are minor spelling and punctuation issues, such as 'Inconclusion' and the lack of capitalisation for 'i'. To improve, focus on using collocations more accurately and expanding the range of topic-specific vocabulary related to media and economics.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues ('Movie apps... provides', 'these location is prone') and missing articles ('growth of ones country'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with apostrophes ('ones' instead of 'one's', 'cant' instead of 'can't'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Increasing the accuracy of basic grammatical rules and proofreading for subject-verb agreement would significantly improve the quality of the writing.
