Student answer (Band 5.5)

Critics argue that nowadays, cinemas and theaters are not really needed because everyone can watch all the films and series online. While the others argue that theaters and cinemas still hold a significant place in the world both economically and culturally. I believe that it is still important to have cinemas and theaters because you cannot get that same experience watching it online. Also its a tradition and it helps the country financially.

First of all, people think that as the entertainment content is available online, there is no need of cinemas and theaters anymore. It is a valid point because all the movies and series are uploaded on apps and websites like Netflix, prime video etc. What is the point of commuting to the theater and paying for a ticket to watch a movie, which you can easily watch while laying in your own bed. For example, people watched Spiderman the day it was released, at home just because they did not want to pay for the ticket.

However, watching a movie in a cinema with a whole bunch of unknown people is way more fun than watching it online. Although there is a ticket for it, it still gives you a fascinating experience which is always worth it. Cinemas are important because it not only brings people closer as it's a part of a culture it also contributes in the country's economy. For instance, when a new movie is released cinemas get booked fully back to back which helps the country financially and also helps people socialize more.

In conclusion, I believe despite the fact that the movies are available online and can be watched without a ticket and hassle, it still gives you an experience of life time. Moreover, it is a part of the culture and brings families, friends closer as people watch movies in cinemas together. It also contributes economically in the country's wealth. So the cinemas are still really very important.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the convenience of streaming versus the social and economic benefits of cinemas. However, the development is somewhat superficial. For instance, the economic argument is mentioned but not explained in detail, and the example of 'Spiderman' is a bit anecdotal and lacks depth. To reach a higher band, you should expand on the 'why' and 'how' behind your arguments, perhaps by discussing the impact of the film industry on local employment or the unique sensory experience of a large screen compared to a mobile device.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a distinct focus. You use some cohesive devices like 'First of all,' 'However,' and 'In conclusion' to guide the reader. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the use of referencing could be more sophisticated. For example, the transition between the economic argument and the social argument in the third paragraph is a bit abrupt. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a strong topic sentence would enhance the overall coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'significant place,' 'economically,' 'culturally,' and 'socialize.' There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'experience of life time' (should be 'experience of a lifetime') and 'contributes in the country's economy' (should be 'contributes to'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. Try to incorporate more topic-specific collocations and avoid repetitive phrasing like 'really very important' or 'way more fun.'

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'its a tradition' (missing apostrophe: 'it's'), 'no need of cinemas' (should be 'no need for'), and 'contributes in the country's wealth' (should be 'contributes to'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma usage. To improve, focus on mastering subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles. Increasing the frequency of error-free complex sentences will help you achieve a higher score in this criterion.
