Student answer (Band 6.0)

Theatre's and cinema have been long around in societies and it's been a part of culture for many people all around the world. Both of these mediums are a form of art meant for the representation of different societies, emotions, cultures, people so we can agree that it plays a vital role in reflecting the world around us.

The first view talks about how some people argue that since everything is moving online and everyone is consuming digital media, cinemas and theatre's are no longer important, though this thought is true in a sense that many people find themselves waiting for the digital print of the movies they like because they feel more comfortable watching films from the comfort of their homes, at the same time it is also worth noting that many people tend to illegally record films in the cinema and post it for the people online which is a bad practice to have as they're not supporting the film industry as well as promoting illegal activities.

The other end of the view talks about how some people argue that theatre's and cinema are still very important and should be supported for the betterment of the socio-economic reasons.I feel more connected towards this view as I believe that films are made for people by the people that are working day and night spending countless hours on a craft they feel will resonate most with people, films are a representation of problems that are prevalent in our society and to creating a film involves writers, directors, actors, supporting staff that are real people working long hours to give us the right representation of those problems with solutions therefore I believe its morally important for us to support the local industry which includes cinema and theatre in person to make them feel seen and heard as well play our part.

In conclusion, I believe both of these aspects are important and one should try to support the film industry both digitally and physically so that our industry flourishes and its benefits our society in learning new things and feeling rightly represented.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both views and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. The discussion on the 'digital age' view is slightly distracted by a tangent regarding illegal recording, which does not directly address the core argument of whether cinemas are 'important'. The second view is better supported, but the economic and cultural arguments mentioned in the prompt could have been explored with more specific examples or depth. The position is consistent, but the essay would benefit from a more balanced exploration of the economic impact of theatres versus the convenience of digital platforms.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into four paragraphs, which is appropriate. However, the flow between ideas is sometimes mechanical. The use of cohesive devices is limited, often relying on simple connectors like 'and' or 'at the same time'. Some sentences are quite long and run-on, such as the second paragraph, which makes the progression of ideas feel slightly cluttered. Paragraphing is present, but the transition between the two opposing views and your own opinion could be more clearly signposted to improve the overall logical flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the message to be conveyed clearly. You use some relevant terms like 'socio-economic', 'resonate', and 'flourishes'. However, there is a lack of variety and precision. There are also some minor errors in word formation and usage, such as 'digital print' (likely meaning 'digital release') and the repetitive use of 'people' and 'things'. To reach a higher band, you should aim to incorporate more sophisticated collocations and topic-specific vocabulary related to the film and entertainment industry.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent errors in punctuation and grammar. Specifically, there is a persistent issue with unnecessary apostrophes, such as 'Theatre's' and 'cinema's' (plural vs. possessive). Additionally, some sentences are comma splices or run-on sentences, such as the final sentence of the third paragraph. While these errors do not prevent understanding, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall fluency and accuracy of the writing. Increasing the variety of complex structures while ensuring correct punctuation would improve this score.
